The **** is functional? Many exercises you can do have nothing to do with any movement yet they transfer benefits. Strength and power through the triple extension (squats and Olympic lift variations), trunk stability (palof press etc.) and upper body strengthening that promotes dynamic scapular stability and rhythm (db exercises, body weight exercises and med ball throws).
