Froch and Haye, especially Haye are on the verge of real world title shots tbf though. I dont really know much about Khans trainer, but his advice when khan came back to the corner after the knockdown was just "you're trying too hard mate" cant help thinking he needs more than that. then again he's just 20 years old and still a novice, so i guess the tone you take with a fighter like that would be different to a seasoned vet. the way khan kept looking at his corner for advice once he got knocked down was worrying aswell. granted he's inexperienced, but he shouln't be so clueless that he neeeds to be looking at his corner for advice actually during the round.
I see no problem with a young fighter looking towards his corner if he has been knockdown, if anything it is a good thing to be looking for advice when something has gone badly wrong. It is a bit worringly that Khan has been caught like that against a bit of a non puncher. But it is early in his career, if his chin is slightly soft there is time to make technical adjustments to improve his defence. Amir can take a lot of heart from getting over that situation well, and remember a man by the name of de la Hoya got caught once or twice against Journeymen/fringe contenders early in his career; it did not seem to do him too much harm!
I thought exactly the same thing when his trainer Oliver Harrison said that. I also wondered why he was looking to his corner. He was clearly rattled not just physically but mentally. He has not really had to face adversity in the ring for such a long time that he now no longer knows how to react when things get tough. But he did well to turn the fight around with a his power which up to that point hadn't fazed Limond. I think Limond was looking to KO khan and that cost him the fight in the last round. Khans punches had little effect before but once he started to walk into Khan punches in an attmept to end it he got hurt. While Haye and Froch are definate contenders I still think they lack the skills and most importantly defence to be more than just another contender or in Haye's case a title holder. Froch will get beaten when he does fight the best at supermiddle and Haye could easily lose the fight against Mormeck if he can't keep the champion at a distance.
would have loved to have seen the reaction had someone like billy graham been in his corner. would have ripped hmi a new one no doubt, and khan doesnt exactly seem like the fragile unconfident type that couldnt take a bit of an ear bashing, in fact that's exactly what he needed after that round.
he's only 20 yrs old at the same time.. he's still a kid in many peoples eyes.. I give him credit where due.. Limond showed his pedigree though..
It was a massive step-up for Amir. Frank's match-making wasnt very good this time, he had 12 fights against bums then puts him in with a proven euro level fighter. Khan did well, alot of people look straight for the negatives, but at the end of the day the way he reacted the knock down was fantastic. He got up, regrouped, and came back the next round and put Limond on his ass. There are alot of positives, he showed he can fight at european level, showed alot of heart to get up and fight back and he showed some grit and determination against a good little fighter. The chin thing could be an issue, but it was a hell of a shot. I think this is the best preparation Limond has ever had for a fight, and it showed, he was sharp and seemed to have alot more pop in his punch that usual.
Good post, his natural gifts (and glaring weakness) would seem to be suited to Manny Steward doing a similar job on him to that which he did on Lennox and Wlad. At least being knocked down should make him realise that keeping his left hand up is pretty important if you don't want to be hit with every overhand right thrown by your opponent. A good wake up call to sort out his defence, but I agree with you that he may not have the right coach to do it.
Khan did himself, his fans and boxing proud. He still has to improve but he is getting there. Limond is no slouch.
Amir Khan did really well, proved his heart and grit. Showed he's a real fighter, kept his nerve and fought back to win a tough fight. That's the mark of a real fighter, the ability to fight back hard when hurt. But there's no avoiding the FACT now that he has a glass jaw. Willie Limond has 8 KOs in 28 wins mostly against 130 pounders. He's a good domestic (Scottish) fighter, but his punch power is WEAK. Khan was hurt quite badly. This is NOT "negative spin" - this is RELEVANT FACTUAL INFORMATION. Khan has weak whiskers, case closed. But the kid done well, no argument there.
Limond fought hard and well. Everyone was proud of his showing. I respect him because he did exactly what he said he would.
Congratulation to Amir Khan for winning the title and Limond for his excellent performance which he came very close to winning. However I do believe Khan was exposed and it looks to me that he regressed in this performance. No lateral movement, poor defence and a suspect chin. He was coming in straight lines. As an amateur I saw him uselateral movement so what is Oliver Harrison teaching him? When some guys win the Commonwealth title like Action Jackson Asiku and Ajose Olusegun they are seasoned operators however Khan looks to still have the L-plates on. If Limond had serious punching power as some of the guys at a higher level have then Khan would have been finished. Khan is a good kid and good for boxing but I am not even sure now that he will definitely beat Thaxton. The jury is certainly still out. He does not have the look of a future world beater to me. He should win domestic level fight. European and world level look debatable at this moment in time. Maybe the need to go the IBO intercontinental and WBO route.
Firstly why do feel the need to highlight text all the time? Secondly no I'm not Jesus Christ, I'm a man who has followed boxing since I was a kid, has stepped into the ring as an amateur and still trains every week, who are to judge Amir the way you did? If you think it was technical mismatch you know little about this sport. Khans speed gave him an advantage and made him look good but he missed with a lot of shots and Willie caused him a lot of problems. This is a forum everyone can express an opinion and I have one that a lot people agree with. Go back to your sports science textbooks and see if you can find a way to help Amir grow muscles on his chin.
how would you of acted if you were in khans posistion, with all the media hype and all the pressure on your shoulders ??? . obviosuly hes not at world level yet hes just started out, but he won't be A world champion by 21 but he'll achieve something great in his career
