Tunney looks pretty damn impressive in that film with the speed corrected, though I agree he was not as smooth as Robinson. He never had much upperbody movement (see Jack Sharkey for an example of a fighter who did in those times) but rather based his defense on footwork and gauging of the distance. Subtle movements in this fight made Gibbons's vaunted left hook combination to the body and head useless.

    The fight in slow motion:

Been trying to upload a speed corrected film of the fight for a while now, just never got around to doing it.

If there's one fighter who did resemble Ray Robinson in the 1920's it's Panama Al Brown.

Yeah I could see a real similarity with Al Brown and SRR, I'd be interested to see the Gibbons-Tunney fight in real time, there were a lot of boxers that looked very good around then and could easily fight now, Kid Norfork against Bill Tate, Tunney looked very good against Dempsey. Movements from the films around this period do show lots of stilted movement, hands down, chin open, doesn't look too great, stll though there is more to it and I do think that Tunney would be able to fight a fighter like Moore or Charles.

GA, I just relaised that Robinson's 1950 bout with Ray Barnes was recorded, do you have that fight, if so could you upload it? I've never seen it.

"Well I'd be interested in that stuff as would many other forum members who box or are interested in what those guys knew that they don't know today. Even if its not a full article, I'd be interested to see what these guys did, like a small profile card. Just curious, how many of these tricks of SRR do you have? just asking because he is easily the best fighter we have film of. Perhaps you would care to list a couple of these tricks of past fighteres here?"

There was a time that I probably would do as you ask, but these days there are alot of dopes out here on ESB Classic that don't deserve any favors.

    :-(

This forum isn't what it was when I read here a few years ago, but I still learn a lot here and am one of many silent appreciators of the good contributions you and others provide from time to time.

A lead right to the body? That's a risky one without a jab to set it up. You're not trying to get our young Greg slapped, are you?;)

I personally like the straight right to the body very much too. Have to be handled with care, though.

I've succeeded with following a lead right to the body with a right to the head a couple of times, just by reflex, and actually been caught with one such combination myself. A very nice one when it works.

Another personal favourite is to slap away a lazy jab with the right and following directly with a straight right.

Yeah, there still are a bunch of great posters out here that I read faithfully. And there really always have been guys who played and/or had an edge, me among them, but they offered something besides angry, adolescent heckling and sheer nonsense. They knew what they were talking about. Now, there's just too many who come off as nothing but jerk-offs. Freedom of speech, as it has devolved on these shores (U.S.) is hopelessly overrated. It's the biggest pollutant that we export.

Absolutely. If you get small and quick-step in under their right or after feinting a jab, it has a pretty damn good rate of success, though, and I'll tell you, they never expect that left hook high coming after it.

You must have quick hands -doubling that right down then up ain't easy. I'd often stick an up-jab in the middle.

Yes, and that is one of Holyfield's secrets to defeating Tyson -mirror image counters.
