Nah. . There are two schools of mexican boxing - the "classical" boxer/puncher school that Beristain teaches - including Sanchez, Finito, and Marquez. Then the "inside technician", or "brawling" school - Fighters include Chavez Sr., Arce, and Margarito.

I think Canelo falls more in the former school. . . He's got a pretty solid jab - it sets up his straight right, which in turn helps him drop that hammer - the left hook which he throws PICTURE PERFECTLY. . .

His KO power is pretty damn good as well. . . Dude hits very hard @ 154. His defense will suffice; in fact, he rarely gets hit with a more than a 30% connect rate. . . His defense definitely is OK - but it does need work.

I think his main problem is STAMINA. .. I think he's a MW squeezing down to Jr. Middleweight.

workrate, he can be outworked. Canelo works at a very measured pace. A guy like Paul Williams would be tough.

    1: No defense at all.

2: Poor counter-punching ability. Mosely was open all night, and he never got countered at all.

3: Average power. (by champion standards)

4: Believes his own hype, which will keep him from improving.

Alvarez seems to approach his opponents as if they were just heavy bags. Someone should tell him that they often move and punch back.

Similarly to Cotto, outside of physical tools, he's blessed with high ring IQ and good timing, and both are much required, because he similarly lacks in elite reflexes and mobility. This results in Canelo defending fairly well vs punches he anticipates, but those he can't see coming land flush as there's no reaction whatsoever.

The problems will come when he a) faces an off-rhythm / awkward fighter he'll be unable to read (which gave Cotto absolute hell vs. PacMan) or when anticipation will be compromised by lack of energy, see Margarito-Cotto late or basically the ending of both JuanMa-Salido fights.

Conditioning and nutritioning can help improve speed and experience can make Canelo an efficient fighting machine, but he'll always get hit flush under certain circumstances and will be troubled given the wrong style, but will be in plenty of high skilled action fights one way or another.

This is also my greatest weakness. The struggle of a white man.

Bad footwork, low workrate, porous defense. He's still future superstar material, though
