I would agree with you if boxing had a decent plan for retired boxers. This isn't to say that guys should be allowed to fight guys who clearly aren't top 15 material ie peter okhello, but if they've earned a title...i don't have a problem with taking one defense in the lower 15 to make some money for their future. a lot of these guys will have to live the rest of their lives from the age of 35 with no healthcare or pension...and aren't good at finance.
They told Oscar "box, box, box". They never told him to run. After round 10, when Oscar did his share of staying away (although he did throw shots too), they said "no more rounds like that". I really don't think they meant "no more rounds where you throw punches".
If he can, then yes, if a limited but fan favourite fighter can get a title shot with minimum effort then who are we rob him of his pay day? Boxing is the hardest sport in the world, I would not begrudge any honest fighter any money he made in the sport.
Myth: The contender must take the belt away from the Champ. If the fight is close, the Champion keeps the belt. Myth: Old school fighters are better because they are old school fighters and fought more often.
it is not about an honest fighter making money. this mentality is what has boxing in the state that it is today. i am not against a fighter making his money. but i am dead set against undeserving fighters getting undeserved title shots because of this twisted idea that a so called champion deserves an easy payday. i know that boxing is a business, but it is also a sport that is supported by the paying public. and these types of fights do more harm than good to the game overall. this is a merit sport. and it is wrong for a fighter that has worked his way up the ranks to be bypassed for an earned title shot for a soft touch for the champion. if the champ wants an easy payday, i have no problem with him doing waht was done in the past. take a non title 10 rounder for the cash, and an easy fight. but do not rob the paying public by defending against an undeserving fighter. it does nothing for the game. and as a champion, he has the obligation to prove that he belongs there. and that is not done against lower tier competition. and no an entertaining fighter does not deserve a payday, just because he is fun to watch. i have seen many an entertaining fighter that no matter how entertaining his fight was they belong nowhere near a title fight. when the best fight the best, everyone wins. fighters and fans. because we will pay to see them again and again. win or lose, in that scenario, the money will be there.
Well you are not being logical you are thinking like a hardcore fan. Very often the popular fighters in the mainstream market are not liked by the hardcore. We may not understand why, but an Ottke was darn popular in Germany, but personally I found him as dull as ditch water, but he made money; so why risk defeat fighting dangerous opposition? Boxing has survived nearly 300 years with that attitude. If anything the last few years fans have getting too many big fights, and we have been spoiled and thus do not appreciate it.
enzo mac should be ranked the third best cruiserweight in the world. in reality, he's never fought anyone in the top 30 rankings and 99 percent of opponents were ranked 100+. how does that make him number 3?
that boxing is just legalised assault. utter bull**** it is a science ,defense is just as important as offense which some judges seem to be unaware of.for example pernell whitaker and james toney qare defensive masters but a lot of judges fail no see that a lot of punches that are blocked on the gloves dont score ,im not sure if all the high profile judges were tested on the rules that many if any would get most questions correct,look at that female judge in the lewis holyfield fight where she robbed lewis by giving rounds to holyfield when he was getting battered from pillar to post? im an ex pro i retired last year my name is stephen"stumpy" chinnock from rugeley england my last fight was against derry matthews.. i won 10 L4 ko3. my records on boxrec.
