Yea, you might have hit the nail on the head about Sugar's lists being about the 'wow' factor, and also in saying that Sugar luvs the sport.

Have to let me know how that book was when you finish it. Still reading 'Ageless Warrior' at the moment here.

Against All Ods by Larry Holmes is the best, I have also read Hands of Stone, about Duran, and Mi Vida Loca about Tapia, which describes his Barrio childhood more than anything. Also a few about Ali, and three on Tyson. And the autobio of Mills Lane. Also that of Smokin Joe, and the original one about Holy.

It is an old one but "gloves, glory and god", the henry armstrong story, is one of my favourites. Also, there are passages in "the sweet science" which still make me laugh twenty years after i first read them.

So many ... some great, many not ... really depends on what you like ...

I'm not a huge biography fan as I find it rare that anyone can tell someone elses life story with any depth . It's more of second hand reporting.

Ghost written or collaborations with fighters is o.k. ....

Many bio's or even autobios are filled with false info but sometimes what is chosen to go in tells more about the fighter than what is left out ...such a senario is Jack Johnson's autobio ..

There have been seven or eight Dempsey straight bios and a few of those he wrote with an author. They are spread over decades ... what is very interesting is to see how Dempsey morphed in what he talked about, what he revealed and how he phrased things as time changed ... The Dempsey from Massacre in the Sun is a rougher, saltier version from 1961 than the one that co-wrote Dempsey in 1977 with his step daughter.

The Greatest was a favorite of mine for many years . It lost it's luster a bit later when it was revealed that the entire book was written by Howard Bingham and had to be approved by Herbert Muhammad. Ali himself never even read it.

Some that I found great for many different reasons ...

John L. Sullivan and his America
    Papa Jack
The Manassa Mauler by Randy Roberts
Massacre in the Sun by Dempsey
    Dempsey by Dempsey/Dempsey
    When Dempsey Fought Tunney
    The Million Dollar Gate
John L. Sullivan by Adam Pollack
In The Ring with James J. Corbett by Adam Pollack
In the Ring with Robert Fitzsimmons by Adam Pollack
    Two Ton by Joseph Mornington
    Muhammad Ali by Thomas Hauser
    Rocky Marciano by Sullivan
    The Fight by Norman Mailer
    Sam Langford by Clay Moyle

And so many more ... I may go to my storage bin and pull some out and start to relist my library ...

Cannot wait for Adam's upcoming book on Jeffries !!!

It was . I tend to like either real autobiographies or sociological portraits of the men and their time .... the Marciano book fell into category two and it was very well done ... a terrific read.
