Personally I believe he can only win early. Jump on Floyd early and let his hands go. Floyd is vulnerable early as he needs time to adjust and Ortiz is an awkward, fast southpaw. Ortiz hits just as hard as Mosley so I believe he can definitely get Floyd going. Ortiz is very dangerous in the first 3 rounds. Obviously the longer the fight goes, the more it favours Floyd. Floyd will start adapting and figuring out Ortizs style and rhythm. I think Mayweather is too tough to be taken out early and I see him starting to dominate Ortiz as the fight goes on. Ortiz gets hit with right hands too much and I expect Mayweaher to light him up like a christmas tree here. One thing to note is that Ortiz QUIT vs Maidana. Vs Berto he was never taken to the same place Maidana took him. Remember, Maidana hurt him few times and Ortiz fought through it and dropped Maidana even after he had been hurt by Maidana. Then Maidana kept on coming and brought Ortiz to that place. Berto never took him there... their fight was competitive throughout. I expect Floyd to make Ortiz quit. Ortiz has quit in him if he gets taken to that place.
I agree that the only way he can win this fight is early but I also feel if he goes in like he did against Berto he's gonna end up on his arse very fast. Intelligent aggression is what Ortiz needs to do.
Not a lot. Not much point trying to get too cute, he needs a Berto level of intensity again. Which I'm sure he'll have if not more, but it probably won't be good enough.
He has to cut the ring down effectively first and foremost. Ortiz doesn't really use the jab properly, he throws it, but not to land it, he uses it to measure the distance, only he's gonna need his jab in this fight to stabilize Mayweather and work his way in, now if he doesn't have a good enough jab, he needs to roll into position, problem there is, he doesn't use enough head movement to do that, which means he might have to walk in, or jump in behind feints with power shots, now provided he's cutting the ring off adequately, he might get hit, as he doesn't have that jab or head-movement, but he could potentially be able to trap Floyd and apply pressure. One thing I do think, is that Floyd might not be able to languish inside with Ortiz giving him a stationary target. Ortiz has an excellent right hook, and with Floyd Mayweather's low left hand, it could spell trouble, add to that Ortiz is an excellent body puncher, is lethal with the uppercuts inside(both hands), has power, and is a lefty, so Mayweather will potentially be bending into his power hand if he tries to go into the philly shell, then its a potentially interesting match up imo, more so than what people think anyway. Whether Ortiz gets outboxed early or late is debatable imo, cause he will either start fast, or he will try to see whether he can Box with Mayweather, but then might abandon his tactics and start putting pressure on(mid fight) if he starts falling behind. IMO this fight will come down to what Mayweather does when Ortiz starts bringing it. Does Mayweather have the power to get Ortiz's respect? Because the angles and movement will only keep Ortiz out for a certain amount time, its what happens when he becomes more aggressive, and starts asking whether Floyd Mayweather has enough pop to keep him his place, to stop him walking in his front door and trying to put it on him. I dont know if Floyd DOES have enough power to keep him out, so Mayweather will either have to work harder and keep moving to offset Ortiz, or he will have to engage more. For the first time in a while, Mayweather might be fighting someone who's going to pressure him, but potentially has the ability to land on him if he decides to shell up and steal a rest on the ropes like he tends to do, so he might have to keep moving, or get Ortiz's respect. With all that said, Ortiz doesn't look that great at cutting the ring off imo, looks like maybe he comes in a bit straight, so he will have to make sure he does this if he's not gonna jab or move his head, because if he fails to do all 3, then... I think Mayweather will win, but I do think Ortiz is potentially a lot more dangerous than what people think. Every opponent Ortiz has fought has visited the canvas I think. The guy knocked Maussa out easily, and it took Hatton 8 rounds or something, he also took Mike Arnaoutis out easily, who has a decent chin imo, so if he can hurt shake Maywether up the way Corley, Mosley did, I dont think Ortiz will let him off the hook. The reason Haye lost to Wladimir, or appeared not to be trying, is because he lost the fight as soon as he took a backward step. Reason for that, is because the movement was supposed to create the angles for him to shoot in with his attacks, but he never found those angles to shoot in because Wladimir is a master at cutting the ring down, so Haye got marooned out at range and couldn't find an angle for to mount his attacks, and so resorted to coming in on the line swinging with the odd wild shot. Ortiz is gonna have to make sure he takes away Mayweather's ability to create angles with his movement, because Mayweather's legs are his greatest asset imo. Mayweather beat Castillo with his legs, if you would of cut his legs off, and made him a more stationary target, Castillo probably would of had more! success.
Floyd will stop Ortiz (or should) Ortiz is so open to the right hand it's unreal. If Berto can drop him, Floyd can stop him.....it's up to Floyd.
I think Ortiz pre fight confidence will spur him into an aggresive start, attempting to close down Mayweather and unload his combinations. Floyd will do his usual thing and have a good look at him, maybe have a few uncomfortable opening rounds then start to take over. Depending on how he feels the fights going and how strong Victor is he may well opt to pot shot him from range or step in with his power shots for a late round stoppage or wide UD. Can't see Ortiz winning this he's too open to right hands for a fighter like Mayweather.
He has to start quick obviously, but I dont think he should box his way in. To me, thats the last thing he should do. Really, he needs to go 'Berto' on his arse, and hit Floyd with everything in the first 3-4 rounds. After that, Floyd will pick him apart. Mayweather was hurt in the second against Mosley. If Ortiz catches him like that, he may just finish him. I doubt it tho. Floyd by late stoppage after making Ortiz look foolish for 11
Here's a thought. a) Who hits harder, Oritz or a shot Mosley? b) Who is the better finisher, Ortiz or a shot Mosley? and c) Who is quicker, Oritz or a shot Mosley? a) I think Ortiz may atually hit harder. He had raw power at LWW and that seems to have carried up. Mosley hurt Floyd. Surely Ortiz can do the same. b) This one i'm not so sure about. Ortiz really should have finished Berto off. c) I'd favour Ortiz in this department. Definitely quicker than a 38 year old man IMO. Now, in the second, Mosley has Mayweather in a bit of trouble with those two overhand rights. Its not unfeesable that Otriz could do the same. But if he catches him, does he have the ability to finish him off?
I dont think there is much he can do to be honest. Due to his style he will loose this fight and I would not be supprised if it come by knock out. Its funny the style you need to beat Floyd is Amir Khan! Floyd wants you to fight upclose! He want Ortiz to fire that left so he can counter all night long! When i say he needs to fight like Khan he needs to Stick behind the Jab ALOT! work the body when he gets the chance and jump in fire a big combo and get the **** out quick before he counters your arse! Speed will be a big thing is this fight as Ortiz is not faster than Floyd is! Sorry but this will be a BRUTAL display by Floyd! Ortiz he made for Floyd! the same as Marqeuz and Hatton were! The only thing he has going is his stance but in terms of boxing skill he already beat a prime Zab so Ortiz has no hope unless its a real lucky shot.
That’s a really interesting post, Gooners, but you’ve left out a key issue – Ortiz isn’t very good. His fundamentals are awful, he doesn’t like getting hit, seems chinny anyway, and can only throw single shots with any sort of accuracy. Plus, Floyd is adept at pressuring himself. He’s a hurtful body puncher, and he delivers that right hand like a rapier – it doesn’t look like it hurts at first, but it stings. It makes opponents wary. You did bring up the key reason Ortiz won’t win, and the reason Floyd chose him – the jab. Without a good one, you can’t keep Floyd off, you can’t stop him timing you, and you can’t land anything of consequence. People say: “Oh but Mosley hurt him!” Twice, in one round, Shane landed some hellacious shots. He didn’t put Floyd down and, from that point on, Floyd kicked his ass. He was coming forward when the third round began and that was it. Ortiz has none of the technique, skill or smarts of even an old Mosley, never mind a young one. This is a MASSIVE step up for Ortiz, and one that will probably ruin his future career. I don’t think he’ll ever regain his confidence. I hope the millions are worth it. Mayweather will eat Khan alive. If it happens it will be a massacre. Khan’s footwork, lack of accuracy and poor ring IQ will leave him open to most of Floyd’s traps. He’ll walk onto something big and Floyd will finish him in eight rounds.
DFT: I agree. Floyd has the style to make Ortiz capitulate. I'd be surprised if he fights again after that, crazy that beating Berto has caused so many to have such a short memory.
