I never call fighters "bums"....unless they literally were bums. Jack Dempsey, Howard Eastman, Edison Miranda. All bums at some point.
I define a bum as an unskilled fighter. But if a fighter dogs it or does not train for fights then he can be a bum too.
I don't know that much about Tysons ambitions in that fight but I know that he like many champs before him had a hard time knowing when to quit. One fight also don't turn a whole career or a fighter from a legend to a bum but a good peak doesn't mean you can't turn in to a bum. Of course my definition isn't perfect or anything I've given that much of thought. Maybe the term bum also got to do with the skill of the fighter relative to the opponent. Two club fighters battling each other is a different thing from one of them fighting a champion or similar. The lesser fighter simply doesn't stand a chance to win regardless of intentions. In this case I could say that the champ is fighting a bum but here the term is rather an insult against the better boxer for not trying to compete.
So, because Gavern gives 100% vs guys he's got very little chance to beat, he's not a bum. But Malik Scott, he decides he wants no mas vs wilder, he is. Let's be real Alex. Gavern is not a bum. A bum is the 25 fighters Gavern has beaten. You made reference to a ranking system, but quite often a solid fighter slips down that ladder, KJ for instance. Kevin Johnson is no bum either. But he has been relegated to gatekeeper status for his last 5 or so fights. Similar to Monte Barrett a few yrs ago. He had just beaten Tua and gotten himself back into the fringe of contention. Joey Abell....David Rodriguez....Mike Mollo...guys who would fight regularly at university gyms.....they are club fighters, occasionally getting a call from a contender to tune up against. Journeyman. Guys like Gavern, Firtha, King. Similar level as clubbies, but more traveled and more often than not, sporting 10, even 20+ losses. Gatekeepers....guys who ran thru BUMS, beat the clubbies and the journeyman who tested em, got big fights and fell short. Jameel McCline, David Tua, Alex Leapei Good fighters who couldn't lose vs BUMS, journeyman or clubbies, but often fought even with other contenders and couldn't quite make it to that next level. All former TITLISTs can NEVER be called BUMS, no matter how they acquitted themselves when they were in over their heads. Even guys like Peter and Maskaev....Gatekeepers no less. Same goes for Toney and Roy. Even calling them journeyman is disrespectful imo.
I was reading articles on John L Sullivan and he used to use the words "I'd lick em". I think he may have called people bums now and again too. but did he ever use the word "bum" in the same sentence he said he'd lick em.
Now that I think about it, I suppose that since my only motivation in life is to constantly slam a ATG heavyweight champion on every thread topic on an Internet forum, I AM A BUM. Especially since I have to use the computer and WIFI at the public library to spew my idiocy. Thank goodness Ol' Wladimir keeps on winning or else I wouldn't have any reason to come out from under my bridge and walk to the library every day. Also, I must admit my fixation on oral bum stimulation is a bit weird. I should probably talk to someone about that.
are you referring to me? And I guess you are referring mistakenly to Wlad K (though hes not a ATG yet) Posts made this week about Wlad by me in defence of wlad - post supporting both Ks - "no, in fact you don't go far enough. I would say they would be already bound for (hof)" post rejecting that wlads chin is terrible - "he probably is the major champ with the worst one, but that said its not terrible, by sheer dint of being able to capture world titles and keep them it cant be appalling. " so Harol, you keep talking shyte, that's good for you, and I'll keep giving a balanced opinion of good and bad on each fighter I know.
Yea I agree. Which is ironic, given that you perfectly fit the description of the type of people you're on about.
