And it took opponents 34 years and 15 lbs above his prime weight to find it.

Best post of the thread---I too am sick of the "Hopkins was green" BS touted here to lower RJJ's win. If Hopkins was so green, please check the record books and tell me how long it would be until he would lose again.

He fought one of the best at MW, then he fought one of the best(if not the best) at SMW, then cleaned out LHW except for DM. I blame that fight on both guys 50/50

...and the Roy Jones supporters come back with a vengeance. Nice points, fellas (and possibly ladies, to be fair). I guess I just wanted more of Roy, a war if you will... something that shows overcoming adversity, digging really deep somewhere he's never had to and grinding out a win. I suppose for myself, I hold that very highly in regards to historical context for a fighter. The median opinion is, Roy Jones is so equal parts a victim of great talent and also, lack of threatening opposition. But, then maybe that adds another question ... Roy Jones got by on physical ability exclusively. No adjustments, no evolution, and that's why his legacy is tainted. The largest supporting evidence of his greatness is in tape and not in record, and in terms of historical status that is not ideal.

    hopkins was green.

sergio martinez didn't lose for ages after margarito beat him...doesnn't mean he wasn't green when he faced margarito.

oh sorry i forgot. this is the rjj love-in. "prime" hopkins lost to roy & went life & death with segundo mercado.

Hopkins was green for sure but the skillset was still there

why the fuk would you compare Martinez and Margarito to Bhop and RJJ? BHop never had the style to beat RJJ and Hopkins was a much more technically mature fighter at that stage than Martinez was (ever was)

cos the criteria being used by that other poster was "he didn't lose again for ages therefore he wasn't green".

it's the old chestnut of using the same argument but a different example to expose the holes in the thinking. :good

re: hopkins skillset: 5 years later that fight wouldn't be one sided...it would be a pick-em. hopkins improved an incredible amount from that point in his career.

No he didn't, if you'd actually saw the fight you'd know BHOPs 1 every second of the fight bar 2 flash KDs and he should have been credited with a KD himself. The draw was a robbery. And Mercado wasn't half bad by today's MW standards. NEXT

And Hopkins was already 28 FFS

Which is why Hopkins ducked the rematch

    A not yet mature Toney????

It was James Toneys 47th professional fight!

And was slightly older than Jones!

Even Hopkins was older than Jones and had fought about the same number of pro fights

Roy Jones was a great fighter, an ATG, though not the greatest by a mile.
But... maybe, just maybe, on his best night, he was THE best fighter to ever step into a ring. Certainly above MW. His athletic superiority in his prime was just so... overwhelming. I don't think any other boxer could ever have beaten Roy Jones on his best night (in his weight-class of course). Not the old-timers, not even Marvin Hagler.
So, guys like Marvin Hagler, SRR, even Bernard Hopkins, they're greater than Roy, but they weren't as good. There's a difference between the greatest and the best.
