I know I'm going to get hounded down for this, but the thing about Trinidad is that he's without a doubt a great fighter but just not as good as people want him to be. He was good at decapitating solid fighters, but when he went up against other elite, such as ODLH, Hopkins, Winky he looked very ordinary. Cotto is a better, more complete fighter and has just as good a resume. I'm not surprised they're not close cos their personalities are polar opposites. Cotto is a no bull****, straight talking, arrogant though more introverted guy. Whereas Trinidad is a flashy, extroverted, attention-loving populist.
I'm more interested in this "everyone in PR thinks he is an *******" thing, now. Can anyone expand on this?
You haven't heard about this? The guy doesn't live up to the nationalistic, populist, cheesy, extroverted persona mapped out by past PR boxing legends so the impression that I get is that boxing fans and the public haven't warmed to him as much as other PR boxing greats. Anyone following Tito was bound to pale in comparison.
Ah, ok. Yeah, I had heard that. That's pretty weak though. It's exactly the impression that I had gotten: just that no one had particularly warmed to him. Your home country calling you an ******* is a little stronger.
No kidding. Where I'm from, there really aren't any Puerto Rican girls but I got my first real glimpse of them when I went to the Pac/Cotto fight... All beauty.
I should mention that I'm not PR, this is just the impression I get as an outsider looking in, and from other PR posters. To me all this talk about Cotto getting all drunk and wild post-Marg loss sounds like a media beat-up.
Cotto is a youmg man, has like 2-4 kids? He's been busy since before the olympics. Dude is a tough guy.
But yeah, its funny how jilted the public feel if one if their own doesn't live up to their expectations or mirror their values. Everyone in Australia thinks Mundine is an *******, and clearly everyone in the US thinks the same of Floyd.
Trinidad is notoriously underrated b/c of the end of his career. He has the record for title defenses at welterweight, fought in a great welterweight division, and went up in weight and cleaned house at 154. Cotto's welterweight division cannot hold a candle to Tito's welterweight division and Tito never won a vacant title. Tito was a special fighter, and to haer things like, "he cant beat a boxer" or "he couldnt box" like so many people say is really selling him short.
People say that on the island a lot though, that he gets all ****ed up, is kind of an *******, etc. Personally, I just think he's not all that concerned about fame, he just wants to be himself, do his thing and not get bothered too much- cant hate on that. Ricans are just used to loud, social characters.
Cotto is a drunk. Cotto is a womanizer. Cotto was once slapped in the face by the husband of a woman he was getting fresh with.
I agree. The reverse of this is true too and you need only look as far as Ricky Hatton to see that. Still, seemed like Cotto got a ton of support for the Pacquiao fight, no? When it was his birthday in training camp too, a load of PRs showed up.
