Cracking question fella, I watched boxing when it was on as a kid but wasn't in to it proper...and I'll be honest.......Boxrec got me into boxing more, I love a stat me and looking at all the fighters records from 80/90's made me watch it more.
First fight I think I actually 'stayed up' for was Lewis v Holyfield I. I started to get my first stomach nerves with Naz cos I wanted him to win so much. Its hard to be a boxing fan when none of your mates are interested. Some know the big fights or watch some stuff on sky if they are in but sustaining my interest if ****ing hard when you have no-one to chat about with. Boo.
The WW's of the 2000's got me started as a fanatic , De La Hoya in particular Had a period of losing interest and then it was Ricky Hatton who rekindled that interest So Oscar and Ricky , other notables , Barrera , Marquez and Calzaghe I suppose you like who you like
watching hagler, hearns, leonard, conteh, ect ect on video at my mates house with his dad in the 80s,we 1st went down our gym in about 84 to learn how to box, great days. go to be honest, didnt and never had much time for ali,the rest of them, frazier and the like i loved, but ali, never took to the man
yup, that night me and my mate were watching it in a house while anothr mate was fingering a bird in the next room,he came running in and shoved his finger under our nose to prove the point, mind you, that could of been pedroza, long time ago:yikes
Bruno was the first fighter I watched regularly, before the Lewis fight I think. Then I watched Benn vs McClellan and Bruno vs McCall. My grandad once told me that people were genuinely scared for him when he got the first Tyson fight, begging him not to do it because he might get killed. Funny how Tyson had that aura about him back then, and how he was probably the most famous person on the planet for a short time. As I got more and more into rugby I didn't really follow it too much until Lewis vs Holyfield and all that happened, then had another spell off before Hatton/Zoo.... been into it ever since.
used to watch the fights on ITV4 when Khan turned pro and a couple of Calzaghe fights, then as an event went to Calzaghe Kessler and Hatton Mayweather and gradually got more and more into it since then
It wasn't any specific fighter , for me boxing has always been a part of my life and I can't really recall a time when it wasn't talked about in my house as my old dad was a fan of the sport from the late 40's until his death three years ago , I guess being Welsh has a lot to do with it as well as boxing is a part of our national identity .
