Eubank vs Benn I I love watching the Eubank/Watson/Benn battles, and never tire of them! I could watch them again and again (wow..I have). This and Watson-Benn I remain my favorites of the bunch. 2 different approaches in executing a mammoth puncher in Benn. Bothe guys come out fast..Benn swinging as usual and Eubank sideways and countering brilliantly. There is not alot of finnesse here as every punch seems to be delivered with the end in mind. Eubank moves alot and makes it much harder to hit him than one might think. By the 4th a mouse is under Benns eye, and by the 5th it is closing...The furious action continues. In the 8th Benn delivers a strong right, that drops Eubank...looked like a slip at first...but while it did not really hurt Eubank (imo) his feet were not set and the KD call was the correct one..In the 9th Eubank forces the action again, and with the exception of a legit slip, fires away. After a strong Eubank charge the ref halts the action and declares eubank the winner by 9 rd tko. Eubank seems to be underrated on ESB..and you often hear Benn mentioned more prominantly than either he or watson...I have both rated ahead of Benn?! Richard Steele seemed to stop the fight to early...I am not disputing that Benn was not hurt or in bad trouble...but he has shown remarkable staying/comeback powers in the past, and I would hesitate to call this one when he did. eubank reminds me of B-Hop..not in style but in his use of angles to frustrate an opponent and take them out of their normal rythem as well as getting in some good shots, that would not land from a stationary position.

Well after the Cowboy lost (LOL!!!!), I was to pumped up to do anything..I certainly could not sleep after seeing homo's interception (LOL)...so I settled in for a night of boxing: Escalera vs "Buzzsaw" Yamabe 4-1-76 WBC SFW Title The firtst two rounds were a little slow, with both guys feeling each other out. escalera trying to establish the jab (fairly succesful) and foolow with combo's (not as succesfull)..while Yamabe tried to get inside the jab (somewhat succesfull) and work the body once there (again semi successful)... the 3rd rd is great escalera starts with the jab, follows with a combo and a big right, yamabe is staggered....yamabe battles back and now escalera is trouble...escaler closes strong to take a 2 rds to 1 lead. The 4th and 5th are good rds for both guys with yamabe edging close rds and applying pressure inside..escalera tries to slow it down with the jab, but is not as succesfull as earlier. 6th escalera comes on with jab, and staggers yamabe..into the ropes and escalera pounces lands several big blows..And the fight is stopped Escalera wins. 1st the fight was stopped way to soon..the outraged crowd bomabarded the ring with forign objects (no pun intended)..esacalera escorted away by the police...no doubt this set up an imediate rematch 2nd this was a great fight..hardly ever talked about but the action from rounds 3-6 is intense.
I actually sat down and watched a few fights today. In the following order, I watched : Tunney-Gibbons (highlights) Tunney-Dempsey 1 (highlights) Tunney-Dempsey 2 (highlights) Louis-Schmeling 1 Louis-Schneling 2 Ali-Bugner 2 (I put this last fight on and in comparison to the others it looked like a sparring session or an exhibition, a game of tag.) Louis-Schmeling 2 gets more brutal every time I watch it. Max was tough, the way he got up 3 times, and you can see him scream from where he got hit and Louis broke his vertabrae. Louis is just on him, straight ****ing him up, it's an execution. The body punches hurt to look at, the head shots are just lethal. Max must've been tough to live to 99 or 100 or 101 or whatever it was. Any ordinary man would have died that night in 1938, or soon after. And the punishment he took from Baer too ! Jeez. Schmeling-Louis 1 was a good competitive fight. Again, Schmeling had to take some lumps. Louis definitely had a good chin if you look at his fight. Gene Tunney is ridiculously underrated, IMO. He's a real classy fighter, strict, disciplined, complete and intelligent in his approach. A terrific body puncher. Bugner 2 obviously isn't one of Ali's better fights but it's still disappointing to see Ali struggle to launch a decent attack against Bugner, who's really just standing around asking for it. Ali wasn't comfortable being the aggressor, and at this stage - and, frankly, in the majority of his 70s fights - he was kind of ordinary. In the 60s he was much better, and I think the opposition he faced in the 70s gets blown out of proportion. If Bugner and Lyle and Young and Norton etc. were anything better than ordinary middling contenders, they would've toasted this old has-been. The next Ali fight I'll watch will be Cleveland Williams, just to remind myself. And then it's time again that I watch Ali-Frazier 1, which is actually one of Ali's greatest fights of the 70s. (Only Norton 2 and the Foreman one compare, IMO)
LOL I'll never quit watching boxing. I like to watch 5 or 6 fights in a row now and then when I got a few spare hours. :good
Snowin' today...so i sat back and watched a few: Boza edwards vs Navarrete Jeff Chandler vs Solis & Muniz Laguna vs Ramos Navarrete vs boza...Great short fight. The first 2 rds were very competitive w/ navarrete gaining a slight advantage in both..In the 3rd Boza comes on stron and although he is tho one who gets cut, comes on strong and staggers navarrete before the rd ends. rd 4 both guys bleeding and the exchanges are even untill navarrete scores big and drops Boza midway through...before the close he drops him again..in the 5th a big right by navarrete drops boza for the final time..all over! Boza, Navarrete, Chacon and limon sure made boxing more fun for a few years there! Perhaps the most under rated of the Philly boxers: Joltin Jeff Chandler vs solis (the 2nd one, not the first where he claimed the bantam weight title) chandler put on a boxing clinic, solidifying himself as the first american in 30+ years to hold the Bantam weight title...Solis was very competitive in the first fight, but outside of a couple (literally) of flurries this is all Chandler..the right Chandler lands to close this out id worth watching the fight for. Chandler vs Muniz II (once again the rematch)...Muniz is constantly forcing the action but almost without exception comes out on the short end of the stick..not a dominating performance by Chandler (as Muniz is to good for that)..but certainly a convincing one..Muniz gives Chandler no breaks, but chandler opens a cut on Muniz and works it over during the next few rds..the fight is stopped after the 7th, due to the cut. Ismael Laguna vs Mando ramos..Maybe Laguna's last performance as an upper echalon fighter, although I scored a Luguna win 144-143 over Buchanan in their first fight (Buchanan did erase any doubts in their rematch though!). This is one of my favortie fights EVER!: The first 2 rds are furious and closely contested w/ a Laguna edge in both. Ramos turns up the heat and pins Laguna to the ropes several times, and works the body over well. in the 4th Laguna shows flashes of one of the most unappreciated boxers (IMO), and dilivers a blistering jab repeatedly to ramos to take 4..in 5 ramos comes on again and working the body a run by laguna closes the gap and the Ramos staggers Laguna to take the round. the 6th is a little slower, with laguna reasserting the jab, a good flash by Ramos in the middle, but Laguna takes this rd. In the 7th ramos is back to the body, but a cut that laguna opened up earlier is showing itself..after a few more jabs the ref halts the action mid way to check him out rd 9 is a jab fast extrodinarie by one of the best (IMO) ever..at the urging of ramos corner, the ref halts the action at the close of rd 9 I believ Laguna is one of the best ever, and while not on par legacy wise with countrymen Duran, would have been a very hottly contested contest..in which I am in the minority, believe that Laguna would have edged!
