ask anybody you know about carl froch ,unless they are a big boxing fan.they have either never heard of him,or dont like him, is that because of bad promotion,or do people just dislike him
I think the British general public dont always take to confidence, theyre prefer our stars to be "one of the lads" types. Froch has gone about his career the right way imo, but money and career wise maybe he shouldve gone down the alphabet route, seemed to work for calzaghe and hatton.
i understand that but surely he is now in a position where he can change all that he is a world champion ,and a exiting fighter,do you think if he beats taylor is popularity will get better, or is he going to be one of those fighters that nobody ever likes,i like watcing is fight s but am not sure if i like him personally
Cos he's more famous for stalking Calzaghe than anything he's done in the ring. I've never met a non-boxing fan who likes him.
Its not as simple as winning a world title and then automatically getting a fanbase. The bottom line with Froch is that he had longish periods of inactivity and hasn't had particualry good expsure when he has fought.
He's not so well known because he has made painfully slow progress since turning professional at a relatively late age. His inactivity has held him back so that he has never been in a position to back up his mouth in luring Calzaghe into the ring. So now he is forced into defending away from home in his first defence against Taylor in an attempt to get a much needed instant boost to his profile. Now that he has made this move into the wider boxing public's consciousness with this bout it's gonna be a shame that nobody will see it on this side of the pond
but if he beats jermain taylor whitch will be a massive win do you think the the british public will change there opinion of him ,as i am not sure they will i am asking you as i read a lot of your posts and you seem to know what you are talking about
I don't want to sound negative but I dont' think it'll matter too much. Taylor isn't a big name in this country and very few people are getting to see the fight in the UK in any case. He'll get plenty of respect from UK boxing fans but we are pretty small crowd but I think he's left it far too late in his career to build up a fanbase with the casual sports fan. Thats why I can't understand his promoter passing up the chance to get Froch-Taylor on ITV to raise his profile. ITV showing the fight live and then repeating it at 6pm on the Sunday after the FA Cup semi final when 10 million blokes are watching and in "sports mode" would at least raise Frochs profile and give his promoter a better bargaining position when selling the TV rights for Frochs next fight. As it is, anyone other than Kessler and he either fights in Nottingham or he goes to the other guys backyard again. Either way, his bargaining position and fanbase hasn't progressed as a result of the Taylor fight. ie. its tough to sell him to a TV network for decent money.
He's only been a champion and on the world scene for 4 months! In that very short spell of time we've had the retirement of Calzaghe, Hatton v Pac being made, Haye v Wlad also, and Khan v Barrera's hyperbole - all in the 4 months since Froch won his title. There is only so much boxing publicity the wider British public is willing to absorb at any one time. Just four months and one fight against an unknown is never going to build the biggest of recognition and fan base. Having said that he has started late, so it may be hard for him to build a really a big following. He's upset a few Calzaghe fans as well, perhaps in a way (but to a lesser extent) like Witter did with many Hatton fans. Check out the anti Froch posts & threads on here and more than a few of them are not coincidently written by die hard Calzaghe fans. This whole streaming sarga and the fight not being shown in the UK has annoyed a few as well. Still, personally, at the moment, I have an open opinion about him, that of neither being overly for or against. That said, I think it's great he's fighting a guy like Taylor in the US for his first ever defense of a World title. It really is something that should be commended when compared to some of the tripe we've been served up in near recent years. Go Froch!
No one outside of boxing knows who Carl Froch is, its nothing to do with him, its to do with boxing in general. Everyone knows who Frank Bruno, Lennox Lewis, Chris Eubank, Nigel Benn, Naz, Barry mcguigan etc are. No one who doesnt follow boxing has any idea who Carl Froch and Junior Witter etc etc are. Boxing just isnt a mainstream sport anymore as sad as it is to say, those days have gone.
They will soon, he'll be the biggest name in boxing. But Hatton wasn't the biggest name when he just fought 20odd fights, was he????
I've a couple of mates who both know and like him, and they're not really into boxing. I can understand why people might take a disliking to him though, he's very brash and outspoken. It's a shame his fight with Taylor isn't getting televised on ITV though, even at that hour of the morning. I mean it was Calzaghe's fight with Lacy which was on early in the morning that really made him hear(and Worldwide as far as boxing goes). The fight was repeated a couple of times at better viewing hours so more saw it and the fight received a lot of attention in the UK media. now Calzaghe had a much bigger profile than Froch does now before that fight anyway, but the result would of been similar had Froch managed to pull of the victory. Instead coverage of this fight in the press will be less than that of the Pascal fight I reckon, and the attention afterwards will be less whether it's a spectacular win or loss. Not getting ITV on board is a major PR loss for Froch. On the upside, if he wins he'll be in demand in America and both HBO and Showtime would look to televising shows with him on it in America. So he could survive without being that recognised here.
