BS. You don't take a punch and have the time to think about moving with it. His chin is granite because of genetics (I'd say). I saw him go down in the first round in one of his recent fights to a huge shot. But he got up and pounded the guy into submission. He can't really box though, one reason he got his arse handed to him by Kessler.
I'm not really sure, about that. He may have improved his punch resistance simply by sparring more and gaining experience. I'm not really a believer that one can improve their chin, at least, you can't go from a sucky chin to a reliable chin. I think he did more sparring, more conditioning, and with more experience, he's a better fighter, thus, I suppose his chin is better. Still, do remember Marquez had him wobbled in their last fight in the third round. He's got a good chin, he's tough, but I'm not really sure it's granite.
are you saying this is to do with heart? im presthey are intertwined. but my Game Game fighters can get stomped. im pretty sure that people are able to get Ko'ed as long as the timing was right and enough mustard was on the punch.
There are a few things i think can influence ones ability to take a shot so to speak: i) Neck strength, thickness ii) Genetics iii) Good balance iv) Physical fitness v) comfortable in the fighters respective weight class, ie, not weak do to being weight drained Whilst its a little off the subject apparently jack demsey used to chew peices of rubber because he believed it worked his jaw muscles and improved his ability to take a shot. Whether there is any truth to that, who knows. Antonio Tarver is another one I am aware of that does daily specific neck exercises to try to improve his punch resistance. Sage
Exactly. Basically, you either have a good chin or you don't. But chins, like anything, occur along a spectrum. A glass jawed fighter can whip himself up into great shape, and if he gets hit, he'll still get starched. Similarly, an iron chinned fighter can take shots even if he's not in the greatest shape for a fight. Better training probably makes the most difference for those who are in the middle ranges. Not much, but some. For the most part, you are what you are with regard to chin strength.
Maybe the chewing gum manufacturers should start sponsoring fighters chins: "Mike Tysons chin was brought to you tonight by Wrigleys - The Granite chinned boxers gum of choice!" Or thinking along the same lines: "Audley Harrisons chin was brought to you tonight by Pilkington Glass"
1. genetics - most important. Every human has different wiring, neurology, and some can take it all night long and some have glass. 2. strong legs 3. neck/jaw strength 4. Properly hydrated, not weight drained :smoke :smoke
I believe it starts with a strong neck and strong legs. Also I believe some of it has to do with your mental toughness.
