What role did boxing play in Setanta going bust?

Is boxing just too expensive for the likes of Setanta/Premiersports etc.

 

Not as much as the England matches that was an insane amount of money to blow

No, they paid well over the odds for a bundle of Premiership games in an insane kamikaze attempt to take Sky head on.

 

I remember hearing that the money Setanta paid for fights hardly ever translated into the viewing figures they needed.

But my only source is this forum round the time Setanta went under, so that could be a load of bollocks.

 

None whatsoever. The venture capitalists behind it lost their nerve. Setanta were doing well in comparison to Sky's early days. Murdoch bank rolled it for ages but these chaps were not in it for the long haul whatsoever.

 

It wasn't anything specific about boxing, more to do with the organisation itself and how it went about itself

 

Setanta went bust because they lost out very narrowly for the rights to live football games. Think there was only a few grands difference between their bid and the eventual winners.

Boxing had nothing to do with Setanta's downfall. In fact boxing in terms of what they were paying for it was among their best returns. As has been mentioned it was paying huge amounts of money, which they didn't have for the football (premiership/England contracts) which caused them to go under. They were trying to run before they could walk.

 

england games that no-one really wanted to see , alot was spent on premireship games aswell but they were the main draw and more than coverd there cost in subscription , i mean if you asked the subscribers why they had it im sure 80% was for the football and all else was a bonus

 

Setanta went bust because they kept airing German, Italian and Russian football which most people couldnt of been arsed watching. That and trying to compete with Sky for the Premiership.

 

If this channel existed ten yrs ago or so..then it would be no problem. But PPV is the key to revenue especially to certain cards and exclusive Fighters etc.

It was probably their **** coverage, **** reception, **** customer service, **** colours and **** games that were to blame.
