I think it is clear that modern MMA has done away with alot of ineffective moves. Of course MMA is versatile so you can do anything but generally your time and energy is better spent trying to execute the most effective moves. For example, shoulder roll and screw shots haven't really found a place in MMA. Of course, a MMA could block a punch with their shoulder and maybe even survive the follow up sequence BUT it isn't the most effective guard to fight out of.

So, this brings me to my first of many questions/threads. What submissions are effective in MMA?

Names, pictures, videos and famous examples are much appreciated. Especially when naming hard subs i.e. Silva getting caught with the flying scissor heel hook.

First off the top of my head would be:
triangle to neck and shoulder using legs or arms
    kimura
    omoplata
    gogoplata
    armbar
    gullitone
    rear naked choke

    please continue...

I think the most commonly used are:

    Guillotine choke
    Rear-naked choke
    Arm-bar
    Kimura
    Triangle Choke

You occasionally see head and arm chokes. Leg locks and heel hooks are pretty rare, since they're easy to defend if you know what you're doing. Some of the more complicated moves can work but are harder to pull off.

Well, frankly every single one of them work, and they're all effective.

Problem is, you're attempting them against a professional fighter who knows how to escape (typically) the vast majority of them, or know the defense and can recognize your moments to mean, "Oh, he's setting this up, I better grab my opposite bicep, cross my arms and lift." (etc...)

Against your minimally trained (or not trained) Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighter, or someone on the street, just about any submission hold will work. They're all effective. One isn't "more" effective then another, they all have the same effect (essentially).

But, off the top of my head?

    D'Arce Choke
    Guillitine Choke
    Head and Arm Guillitine Choke
    Rear Naked Choke
    Triangle Choke
Inverted Triangle Choke (Amazing submission that was done in the Bellator Fighting Championship. It's on YouTube and it's Submission of the Year!)
    Arm Triangle
    Kimura
    Omaplata
    Americana
    Brabo Choke
Straight Arm Bar (Or modified arm bar, whatever)
Arm Bar (from top or bottom)
Neck cranks or spinal locks (rare, I believe)
    Body Locks
    Knee Bar
    Leg Locks
    Foot Lock
    Ankle Lock
    Toe Hold
    Heel Hook

And for all of these, there are numerous variations and way to apply them. (There are hundreds of set ups and positions for the triangle choke. People just associate it with the most common form. Leg over the carotid, arm in, triangle from the bottom.

    the bullfrog choke

you grab the guys ***** and loop it up and under his ballz and then tie it in a knot around his sack and crank it for all your worth, if you sink it in and a guy refuses to tap you can crank it so tight that the testiez swell up like a bullfrog puffin the underside of itz mouth up while callin for a mate

or therez the fist**** which alot of the gay mma fightera are adapting to butt if you sink your arm in far enough and grab a internal organ even the biggest flamerz tap
