I wasn't following boxing back then but i guess it must have been a major shock for the boxing world, akin to Mayweather being KTFO today by someone who isn't Pac
Honestly, Sad but that's why they lace them up. One of the biggest upsets in my life time next to Douglas/ Tyson.
was surprised but not shocked considering Roy's performance in the first Tarver meeting. was almost equally surprised when Jones got knocked out by Glen Johnson
Where I am from, Monte Carlo, there was rioting in the streets...cars turned over, businesses on fire, injured people, fortunately no deaths we dont get much civil disorder but when news of that KO hit....wholly moley:scaredas:
I had ordered the pay per view and I was telling people who never saw Roy just how badass he was, and then next thing you know he's knocked out and the fight is over. I was like WTF?! Then I went and smoked a blunt.
Yeah, the Johnson one was crazy, too. Jones was behind, and Stewart said something about him being in panic mode. I was hoping he could do enough over the next few rounds to earn a controversial decision at least, then - BOOM. I jumped about 10 feet in the air from shock, and was depressed for the rest of the night.
I sat on the couch motionless like him on the canvass. The image of his twin sons crying at ringside is clear in my mind and thats when i really knew his career as an elite fighter was over. He should of retired after that and at the very latest he should retired after tito. Although it was two past their prime fighters fighting at least it was a win over a big name. And he can say in his last fight it was a win over a legend if he was bloated @ 170.
It was the most most schocking boxing event I watched since I was a young hooligan watching Tyson vs Douglas but it was way more sad for me cause I was older, more into boxing and a far bigger Jones fan than a Tyson fan. I was shocked and down about it for a week.... me, my bro and dad were all ridiculously big Jones fans and we all stood there silent in disbelief for a good 10 minutes, felt down the rest of the week.
I was shocked,i just thought the first Tarver fight was a bad night for Roy,i assumed he would win the rematch on points, when he got knocked out i was in shock for a few minutes..
never even knew about Roy at the time here in London, although no one had heard of Joe Calzaghe or Ottke either. Wish I had though!
"I could probably give Jones a tough fight, probably the best fight he's ever had," said Calzaghe. "But I know my capabilities and unless I got paid the crown jewels I wouldn't want to risk it." "I have no interest any more in Roy Jones and no interest in Antonio Tarver. Jones is washed up and Tarver was never that good anyway, he just caught Jones when Jones was shot lol
