What went wrong exactly with Canelo's career post-Bivol?

Pretty much every win since Plant stinks tbh.

I am not really knocking Canelo though. He's a 1st ballot HOFer and a fringe ATG. I dont know that he could ever be stopped which I guess is a compliment (and that includes fighting likes of Hagler, etc.). But the Bivol fight brought Canelo back to reality and he doesnt have a single quality win since:

Munguia was a decent win that looks overrated now
Berlanga was/is a hypejob who has power against journeymen
Jernell fought scared because he's a 154lb'er and retired afterward
Ryder is one of those tough seasoned brawlers but boy did he touch Canelo up too...and retired afterward
    GGG3 was a literal 40+ opponent who...retired afterward

Last 3/5 opponents Canelo fought retired in GGG, Ryder, and Jermell. That alone tells you none of those are quality wins. And Munguia and Berlanga have been criticized for years for having soft padded resumes.

Canelo hasn't done himself any favors by avoiding Benavidez. To top it off there are ridiculous rumours of Canelo fighting Jermall, another retired opponent, and if not him...no good options on the horizon. Mbili or Bud? Neither are attractive.

Other than not fighting Benavidez I don't really have an issue with Canelo's run post Bivol. He's beating solid fighters and champions. Plus it's not like there's a lot there at 168 currently anyway. I do think Canelo is declining. I first started noticing it in the Plant fight. I expected Canelo to dominate Plant. Put on a master class performance. Plant was very competitive. I remember Canelo contributing that to being tired from fighting 4x in a year. I thought that made sense at the time. Then he fights Bivol and loses. I thought it was a weight issue. Canelo just isn't a light heavyweight. Then he fights GGG. He didn't look great in that fight IMO. Canelo said he injured his hand so I gave him another pass. Once he didn't look good against Ryder that is when I finally accepted he is declining. He's still an elite fighter but the fighter from 2017-2021 was gone. He's looked better as of late but not the same. His hand speed has dropped off. He hardly throws combinations anymore. His head movement has basically become nonexistent and relies far more on his high guard and chin.

His record since losing to Bivol is honestly trash - shot GGG, shot Ryder, Charlo moving all the way up from 154lbs to 168, inflated record bum Munguía, inflated record bum Berlanga.

The gulf between top 175 and top 168 fighters is more than just size. It's also a massive talent gap. Canelo's casual fanbase can't comprehend that lesser-known fighters are better than the more popular smaller fighters Canelo had been feasting on.

Typical throw objectivity out the window criticism.

Now use those same standards to compare the other top ten PFP fighters.

I must have missed all those solid fighters and champions he beat post Bivol. Who are they again?

Canelo needs to fight Terrence Crawford, he can also fight Tim Tzyu, other than that there sort of isn't anyone out there who deserves a shot.

Yes. Boxing just like life is a risk and reward sort of game. Nobody else than Tim Tzyu and Terrence Crawford bring the sort of risk/reward ratio to the table to justify a shot at Canelo. If some fighters have a problem with that then they can blame themselves for not being more popular and thereby bringing a greater reward to the table.

If you don't like it then go volunteer for the frontline in Ukraine for either side.

It's not even that I don't like it, it's just that your wrong. Dead wrong.

There's no reward for beating Zoo ATM, none.

Your premise is just so very flawed.

Look Canelo turned pro at 15 so all this he started out at a lower weight class is straight up BS. He wasn't even a grown man yet and hadn't even filled out yet.
I thought I was the only one that thought Trout had done enough to win lol.
Lara in my opinion cost HIMSELF the fight because he started moving too much so it wasn't certainly anything Canelo did. And the fight was a draw at worst for Lara.
And GGG vs Canelo 1 was an absolute robbery and I am not a fan of either - GGG absolutely out boxed Canelo.
Mayweather won EVERY SINGLE round vs Canelo and made it look easy. Lets remember Mayweather was closer to FORTY then he was THIRTY so it wasn't like Mayweather was in his prime.
I understand the younger posters need to have a great boxer in their time period but man if Canelo is the best you have you are coming up short.
Sweet Pea was a 5'6 light weight who moved up all the way to jr.middleweight and when he was in his prime he handily beat everyone. And he fought EVERYONE.
Compare his resume vs Canelo and you will see how vastly inferior Canelos is.

The difference between 168 and 175 is nothing on paper. But the big names Canelos been beating at 168 and Canelo himself are typically coming from 154 and 160. Fighters aren't "160ers" or "168ers" they are either light or heavy for their height.

I'd like to see Plant at 175 though.

Canelo already dominated and was undisputed at 168. Im guessing his motivation died down when he dared to be great by moving to 175 which was a step too far for him. There’s nothing more at 168 that can enhance his legacy. At this point he’s just collecting checks and isn’t half the fighter he was during his peak in 2021. Munguia and Berlanga don’t make it 12 against that Canelo.
