Johnson met Ferguson 6 times. Ferguson won none of them. Ferguson, going into the 2nd Johnson fight had a total of 38 fights under his belt.Considerably more than Johnson. You are correct on the Ruhlin draw, most thought Ferguson deserved the nod. The local press ,the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Philadelphia Press made no mention of any foul by Johnson ,in fact they thought Johnson was boxing under wraps. In his first fight after the 2nd Johnson one, he ko'd Bob Armstrong in 1 round. Ferguson did not injure his hand during the fight, afterwards he excused his poor showing by claiming he had hurt it accidentally hitting a low beam in training.
1. Tommy Burns 2. Fireman Jim Flynn 3. Denver Ed Martin 4. Frank Moran 5. Sam Langford Funny how in an era with great black fighters most of his best wins imo are white guys.
He signed to defend his title against Jeannette twice both fights were vetoed by the NYAC. He signed to fight McVey and Langford in a joint package deal ,the offer was withdrawn by the promoter. Anything else he could have done to make the fights happen?
My apologies if I'm missing something here but what does that have to do with my opinion on his 5 best wins? Can't really give him credit for wins he didn't get.
you know that perception of yours that those ones were greater? that was very popular back in the 19th century, so much so that other fights often couldnt be made, but that was a long time ago and you'd think you'd have grown out of it too by now.
It has nothing to do with it! Your top 5 picks are fine. 1. Tommy Burns 2. Fireman Jim Flynn 3. Denver Ed Martin 4. Frank Moran 5. Sam Langford Curious, as Mcvey pretty much stated he was going to be in this thread. " No further interest from me -Mcvey" Looking for an ESB consensus. So far Burns, and Martin rate as Jack's best, with Moran, Flynn, McVey and Langford making a showing
