well that sucks! I thought seeing as it was on TV, it could be saved. With fighters like Louis and his bout with Conn for example, which was on TV, how come the fight was so brilliantly preserved, it was fought in 1941, was it filmed with a camera at the ringside which is why you can still see it in such good condition? What I mean is, the film we have of Conn-Louis is not what was shown on the TV but was what was recorded at the arena on the night correct? If yes, it could be that some of Ray's earlier fights were recorded as ringside such as the Gavilan bouts and still be viewable (if found that is) today? Ray's peak was 1946 and we have film of a lot of fighters before this period in a professionaly filmed bout, it seems too far fetched that his entire prime 1943-46 not a bout was filmed other that four mins worth of a couple of stay-busy fights Ray took.
i have the video "the greatest fights of sugar ray robinson" on it are highlights of lamotta (the 14th of feb fight) graziano, turpin (2nd fight) maxim, gene fullmer (THAT left hook) bobo olson, and basillio. ive had it about 20 years now, still watch it now and again.
The situation you are referring to: Conn-Louis is one where it was shown on television, and also filmed by different motion picture cameras to be shown in theatres. Remember, back then most people didnt have televisions so if you wanted to maximize your profits you showed it on TV AND in movie theatres AND had it on radio.
None of it exists. All the stuff that all of us have seen numerous times are just re-enactments by the actor that played him in Raging Bull. The resemblance between the two is just uncanny, isn't it?

Thing is, if fights like Robinson-bell was shown on TV, guys like James Norris would have wanted profits maximised and would have shown bouts in theatres as well as on TV as you just said, so the film could still exist? Was every bout on TV usually filmed for theatre as well during this period? Theres radio broadcasts of Robinson-Curcio, Robinson-Belloise so is it safe to assume these too were filmed with motion picture cameras? Klompton, this isn't a Harry Greb situation is it? films were on much more preserve-able stock than nitrate in the 40s, right?

Not necessarily. You cant assume that just because something was on TV or on Radio, that it was filmed, or preserved for posterity. Tons and tons and tons of fights were on radio that werent filmed. Some fights that werent on TV were filmed. And some fights that werent filmed were on TV. It just depended on how everything was worked out beforehand.

I think that is the case, ive never heard or Robinson-Curcio existing on film, never know though stranger things have happened, this bout is not available to the public right now anyway.
