What's Canelo's best chance...

  1. Dodging all of Floyds punches, attacking him with power punches and doing his brilliant 8 punch K.O combo to knock him out.

Canelos best chance IMO is to bring a similar style that he did with Trout, Darting in and out using speed and angles win early rounds try to win every single early round...

Cut the ring off obviously but Canelo has to make the 36 year old man use his legs more than he would like to. So in grabbing early rounds knowing Floyd will be in reverse early you put Floyd in a position in which he has to turn it on mid way though if he wants to win.

That leaves Floyd with no choice but to take more risk mid way through, and at that point Canelo should switch gears and box as he did with Trout make Floyd miss and catch him in between.

Floyd does not throw combinations as he used to 1 and done is pretty much his method he likes to wait until you make a move then he counters you, Canelo will have to feint allot make Floyd make the first false move then counter Floyd.

if Canelo can set the tone early and win 4 of the first 6 rounds then switches gears and Makes Floyd come to him, Floyd will end up faded come the championship rounds, and if Canelo gets in that body work I see a stoppage for him there if he fights that style...

I love how the usual here are dismissing this kid as they did when Canelo fought Trout.

in contrast to that, I also believe for Floyd to win he is going to have to step out of his norm here, I believe Floyds best chance here is to try and get something done early.

Nail Canelo with something big before Canelo starts to get into a rhythm and gets used to Floyds speed. That I expect to come from Floyds left hook.

Floyd is going to have to fight this man he isnt going to be able to pot shot him all night long, this is a kid who has done nothing but improved each time out. So if Floyd is expecting to win here I believe Floyds going to have to use everything he has to do it.

But chances are Floyd hurts his hand the fight gets stopped, *****sexuals will have an excuse and claim Saul didnt really beat him.

pretty shitty but I see it happening

I'd have a greater chance of winning the lottery, and I don't buy lottery tickets!

  4. Just wait and see. No one thought Canelo beats Trout and he literally schooled him. While Floyd is throwing with money in some clubs, Canelo is training for the fight of his life.
Floyd made a big mistake. The first time he is on the ropes, he get to know some real punching power and his spirit breaks.

Step 1: Suck up whatever fines are in the contract for coming in over, and troll Floyd by coming in at 154 instead of 152 (like how Floyd trolled Marquez by coming in at 146 instead of 144.) In the biggest fight of his life, he has to make sure he's not compromised at all by weight draining, even if it means paying some extra dough.

Step 2: Start the training camp NOW and close it off to the public so nobody really knows what's going on in there. Focus on conditioning and timing/slipping punches as much as possible, he's going to need to. Marquez recently had a super long training camp for the fourth Pacquiao fight, and he clearly benefitted from it in my opinion.

Step 3: Since he has no history of hand trouble (meaning no need to protect brittle hands the way RJJ and Floyd Jr. today had to), and also because his defense no longer appears dependent on using his gloves to block/parry shots, ditch the Grant gloves and use Cleto Reyes for the fight. He's probably not going to hit Floyd a ton, so whenever he does hit him, he has to make it count as much as possible.

Step 4: If Floyd asks for 8 oz. gloves like he did for Cotto, agree to it; in keeping with the point above, Canelo has to max out his punching power/handspeed, and since he'll probably have anywhere from 15 to 20 pounds on Floyd, it's unlikely Floyd can significantly hurt him even with 8 oz. gloves.

Step 5: Execute the following strategies during the fight:

*Start off with a relatively static, high guard with the gloves up near the face for the first three rounds or so. Take the center of the ring so he doesn't have to move too much, and make Floyd do the circling on the outside. Throw off the jabs and straight rights typical to Floyd's outside arsenal with the head movement from the Trout fight or the gloves. Floyd responded to this tactic in the Cotto fight by throwing a looping right hand and a wider left hook, both of which were slower and left him more open to attack than his usual straight right and left hook. Cotto usually stood still, absorbed the attacks on the gloves, and then tried to come back with his hooks. What Canelo has to do instead is time when the left hook or the wide right are coming in, and then dart forward with either a straight right to the head or body (when Floyd throws the left hook) or a jab to the head/left hook to the body (when Floyd throws the right hand.) If timed correctly, this should allow Floyd to be hit, and put Canelo in close range without getting tagged by making Floyd overshoot on those looping shots.
**Once in close range, Canelo needs to use his size and strength to maximum benefit. Lean on Floyd, throw uppercuts (Canelo's uppercuts looked great in the Trout fight, but should only be attempted in close quarters, as trying one from midrange or from long range would leave too great a window for Floyd to counter him), hooks to the body, bull him toward the ropes or the corners- anything to wear him out.
***For rounds 4-6, since by that point Floyd will probably try to adjust/switch tactics, perhaps by going at the body some more, adjust the guard slightly; Canelo should occasionally drop one hand to protect the body (but keep the other one high). This will leave an opening again for Floyd to attack the head, but again, because of Canelo's size and solid head movement, he probably won't suffer too much for doing so. More importantly, Floyd looking to throw will give Alvarez his own chances to throw with him and hit him with something bigger and harder (if Canelo's left is down, Floyd probably responds with a right to the head, giving Canelo's low left a chance to hit with a hook to the body; if Canelo's right is down, then a Mayweather left comes in, giving Canelo a chance for a right to the body or possibly a right uppercut depending on how close he is.) To give Mayweather a different look for this segment of the fight, Canelo should change tactics and box on the outside, using some lateral movement.
****For rounds 7-9, Alvarez should again change tactics. Floyd often adjusts well to what his opponents are doing, mainly because they fail to come in with backup plans or change tactics themselves. The key to fighting Floyd, I think, is to not let him get too comfortable or too used to what you're doing. Both to save energy/his legs and to give Mayweather another new look to deal with, Alvarez should hang back in these rounds with his back to the ropes, entice Floyd to come forward and attack him on the ropes. Cover up, and be sparing in the return fire, mostly with jabs and straight rights lunging forward to counter (and if he ends up in close range, then uppercuts and hooks before they get broken up.) Even if Floyd outlands him and outworks him in these rounds, the key for Alvarez here should be just to land the bigger, more eyecatching shots, while simultaneously covering up and making most of Mayweather's connects look partial or miss. That should be enough to muddy up the scoring even in these rounds, which would constitute something of a break.
*****Finally, for the championship rounds 10-12, Alvarez must change tactics again, and blow his load a little bit. The rounds 7-9 strategy would be meant to preserve enough gas to change gears and pressure forward with an increased workrate. Alvarez would have to show forward movement and agression, two traits that judges love, and do whatever he can to steal these rounds from Floyd, who usually closes pretty strongly. Hopefully, by this point the 36 year old Mayweather would be a bit more worn down and slower from fighting a much bigger, stronger man, and could be easier to catch up with and land some hits on (if Alvarez has one big weakness other than a questionable gas tank and a lack of height/reach, it's rather slow foot speed.) Floyd might have to stand and trade with Alvarez late too, especially since the GBP judges might not smile on him fighting too negatively late in the fight if it's close and Alvarez has successfully kept the fight close or even won most of it early.
******As a side note, for all rounds, try and open and close the rounds with a flashy flurry or combination to further appeal to the judges.

In short, Alvarez's best chance is to have multiple tactics and strategies ready for each segment of the fight to give himself the best chance of both winning rounds or, failing in that, to make them close and muddy enough to possibly benefit from a "corrupt judges help the young star at the expense of the old star" situation (think Pacquiao/Bradley.) Still, he shouldn't stray too far from his base, which is as a counterpuncher; but since he's not as defensively good as Floyd, he will have to switch up his tactics/show some carefully measured aggression/take calculated risks to entice Floyd to open up first and be the aggressor.

This all the waaay. Canelo is a smart boxer-puncher who can also counter. He adjust to the opponents speed just like Mayweather. He will get used to Mayweather's speed and once he does, he box with him.

Expect Canelo to put on ace boxing performance in this fight.

Floyd's not fighting someone who is going to try and take his head off early. But if Floyd get comfortable offensively, Canelo WILL try and take his head off.

I honestly believe Floyd will have to become someone else and bring it early IMO he has to do something big early to discourage Canelo to make Canelo think twice before doing anything.

if he does that then he can switch bag to setting traps on Saul, but if he doesnt discourage him early the only thing that will come of this is Sauls confidence will build with each passing round and that is something you dont want if your a 36 year old man with 4 fights left in your contract.

Since this is a JG thread and I have a lot of respect for the man, I feel I should post a more serious answer to go along with the rather facetious one I gave earlier.

The tools that Canelo needs to use and have sharp are his jab, well timed right hand, and body attack. (The body attack can be particularly important, since Mayweather is a lot easier to hit to the body, andf the way Mayweather holds his arms means that a right to the body has a good chance of going around Mayweather's elbow and hitting the target, and Floyd is somewhat reluctant to change the position of that arm so that he can use it to parry and roll head punches more easily. One of the few times the right to the body may be a more promising blow than the left hand liver shot.) Plus the defensive skills and instincts that he showed against Trout.

There are a couple of strategies I think have some potential against Mayweather. The one I think best fits Canelo is what McGrain once called the "part-time pressure" strategy. Basically, it boils down to trying to score points by using some pressure, and as soon as it seems like a point has been made with the judges, backing off and forcing Mayweather to come to him to try to rescue the round.

Despite what *****s will tell you about how Mayweather is the GOAT on both offense and defense, Floyd isn't nearly the fighter coming forward that he is when he's going backward or luring someone in. Cotto did this in one round in particular in their fight, I think round 6, where he scored points early then backed up and boxed, made Mayweather try to take the round back, and Mayweather was ineffective while Cotto did some of his best boxing and jabbing.

Make your statements early and late, make Mayweather have to step out of his comfort zone, use the jab, switch up your tactics so Floyd is never totally settled on what you'll be doing and when. And as always against a boxer and defensive specialist, don't bank on the knockout. The more you do it, the less likely that it'll come.

It was the 6th I was thinking of, and while the fight doesn't seem to have a direct upload on youtube, here's at least someone taping it with their camera so you can see what I'm talking about. Round starts at around 4:10

    [yt]vpOhav_2dSg[/yt]

I can see some similarities between what Cotto was doing here and what Canelo did at times vs Trout. The big questions are going to be about Canelo's stamina to keep doing this sort of strategy and his discipline to keep going with it and keep a fight boring if it does start working for him.

is it at all possible that it wasnt a stamina issue that Canelo just simply knew he could coast and win with out having to over work? or is it possible that Canelo after having gained control of the fight possibly did not want to over impress and blow the fight with Mayweather?

Think about it had Canelo knocked out Trout in brutal fashion what are the odds we would get the Mayweather fight? Maybe Canelo fought that way to bait Floyd in....:think
