Yeah, I'd assume getting down that low is quite dangerous.

Smart matchmaking is a nice way of saying cherry picking. Same thing. It blights boxing. We end up being robbed of those really tasty match ups that should happen routinely (think of that welterweight division, which is rammed with talent and mouth watering match ups) because everyone is so fixated on smartmatching and not losing. Sod that. Roll the dice and see how the chips fall. That's what sport is all about.

Paul knew the risks, but he believed he had the skill and statmina to stay with Tete until the mid-late rounds and then get inside his reach and break him up. He told us his plan on ifl. That's wasn't a bad strategy either given (a) Paul's skills and Tete's history which showed he sometimes broke down under pressure. The problem is that strategies don't always work out in the ring. And Tete was top notch and had Paul's number.

But it doesn't matter. He can and, judging by his classy ifl interveiw post fight, will come again.

Lol @ believing Frampton gets to 2% bodyfat. That's impossible.

    Well said once again!

Why is it when a fighter loses, everyone goes crazy. Shouldn't of fought him, get a different trainer etc etc. Christ, its only one loss to a very good fighter. Like you said, you don't see top football teams getting written off when they lose a game or two.

There's an issue in this country really. Prospects arent brought up the right way. I hope Yafai doesnt make the same mistakes. Butler should have fought Narvaez, Luis Concepcion or someone of that ilk to propel him for title fights. Miguel Gonzalez is a non punching taxi driver from Mexico, Ruben Montoya is another taxi driver.. There not sufficient tests for the upper echelons of the division.

I completely agree. My point is that Paul did not have a strategy in this fight. He boxed perfectly well if he was facing an opponent his own height. But he had no answer to this very specific physical freak - the much taller man. He had no strategy.
He needed to block/slip/come under the longer jabs of Tete. He couldnt do it. When he did occasionally get in close he would find himself immediately smothered by Tete, again he had no strategy to overcome the clinching of the taller man.
There ARE ways and means to do this, others have done it before, - Paul just needs some practice against similar men (of lesser ability, obviously) before being given the impossible task he was given. Build up fights. Practice fights.Thats all I'm saying.
Smarter matchmaking doesnt rule out great fights. In fact it can enhance them.
What happened WASNT a great fight. If Paul had more practice it would have been a very competitive fight. Much better to watch. Maybe he might never beat Tete, who knows, but he could have coped better and us fans would have watched a better fight.

He did have strategy. Listen to this interview from 5minutes in:

    It just didn't work!

I don't hear much of a strategy there, but then I don't expect him to broadcast what he is going to do anyway.
I do hear him saying that Tete is...."...everyone's worst nightmare..a tall southpaw that can punch"
He seemed to be banking on Tete bottling it when the going got tough...not much of a plan IMO especially when Paul hadn't a way of actually Making it tough.
Had Tete been Paul's own size I've no doubt we would be here today looking back on another excellent win by Paul.
But he had never dealt with or encountered a physical freak like Tete, not even sparring.
He went in there without a plan...without a proven strategy....certainly without one he could actually carry out in the ring anyway. A strategy in your head is one thing. But if you can't implement it......

Paul didn't have the size strength and ferocity to push tete back, and was picked off quite easily, he jumped into his work with useless flurries, he actually slipped a lot of shots but never got close to damage the body regularly, I actually thought Paul's quicker feet would trouble tetes wide stanced posture. Tete is beatable, for a strong pressure fighter, but paul isn't really that. Tactics or no tactics. Zolani was superb in there. Butler still got plenty of time to mature and develop more tools, very talented though.

The strategy is disclosed where he says:

'...we know how difficult it will be for 2,3,4 rounds...that's the game plan - keep working away, breaking him down, working him...so once we get to rounds 5,6,7,8 we'll pile on the pressure and he'll want out [and]...he likes to switch off after four rounds [and] ...he leans over with his jab'

A strategy doesn't have to be a detailed roadmap to success; it can be broad, simple and couched in wide terms, as the above really.

No I am not on Twitter and as I have said in the pictures I have seen I have seen very little definition.
