what's with some of the online boxing records? I respect what the compiler's have done, it's a huge endeavor but I did a basic search of a famous hall of famer bareknuckler and found a unreported fight within fifteen minutes. anybody else found things in the newspapers that don't match the reported records? what I found (and yes I know not always are the papers accurate) http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?_r=1&res=9B07E1DB1238EE3BBC4A53DFB767838F649FDE
Round 3 sounds particularly brutal, if Nut, Peeper and Conk mean what you would think them to mean today
nut was the head, peepers were the eyes, not sure about the conk, it might have been what they had for dinner.
Pretty sure it was the nose. Or at least i hope it was, would be pretty brotal if they had just mispelt one of the letters.
I agree about unreported fights In the early 1950s, I saw the fight between Sugar Ray Robinson and BOBBY DYKES ,at the old Coney Island Veledrome in NEW YORK...The fight I saw has never been recorded in the Online or printed record books..Never reported, but I was there.....
Had a fighter on my amateur boxing team who turned pro, Michael DeLaRue, listed as dead for a few years. Only discovered it when I checked on his record, by chance.
Well, many records, especially of the old-timers, are not complete. But I guess they are constantly working on it. Didn´t Henry Hascup they he works with them confirming fights or something like that? You could report this fint to them and they probably will pick it up.
bodhi, I have told hh, amongst other boxing fans, about this fight I and 3000 or so others , in the audience, saw between Robinson and Dykes in NEW YORK,early 1950s...To no avail...So frustrating to me after all those years...That is my own " Bermuda Triangle ", methinks..b.b.
this fight is available online, very good performance from robinson, even does a little showboating for the crowd, probably him at the tail end of his prime.
That is the problem...The fight that you are referring to is the Ray Robinson vs Bobby Dykes fight, Nov. 8,1950 in CHICAGO....This fight on youtube ,was fought in CHICAGO, ILL. The Robinson/ Dykes fight I SAW was at the Coney Island Veledrome, New York, probably 1-3 years after..I am fairly certain that this was the 2nd time Robinson fought the lanky contender Bobby Dykes...Sadly to me, not in any current record books....
ah, i tohught they only fought once, which brings the point of incorrect records up again. out of curiosity, how many times did you see the prime sugar ray fight?
bman, thanks for your interest in my mystery... I saw the great Ray Robinson in his prime four times...Henry Armstrong, Jimmy McDaniels, at MSG...Robinson vs Bobby Dykes in Coney Island,NY, and the last and most exciting fight was Sept.12, 1951 against Randy Turpin, Polo Grounds ,N.Y.,when Robinson avenged his loss to Turpin in England...By far vthe best fighter I EVER saw, in his prime...I hope I answered your question...b.b.
yeah thanks for answering. wow, musta been amazing to actually see him at his peak, wonder what it was like... a great fighter even when he was getting older, that hook that floored fullmer in 57' is him going slighlty off, at his prime he musta caused terror to his opponents. Burt, a question, Sugar's record in the forties at his prime shows his fights ending quite quickly. KO 1, KO 2 etc, yet his later bouts, his fights went the distance, granted he was getting older, but it made me wonder, did he fight differently in his prime, more aggressively or wanting to end it quickly? ive always wondered about his fighting style at his peak, could you please shed some light on this for me? thanks.
