I watched the Tim Witherspoon - Carl Williams fight last night. Not a bad fight. Anyway, Dave Bontempo did the call with someone whose name escapes me. It was like this guy was given a little homework to study up on the fighters, so he didn't come off as a total clod, but when he injected his own thoughts it was pretty awful. You could tell Dave was trying to reign him in, but this guy was one of those guys who just keeps talking even though he didn't know what he was talking about. An example - he said that this fight was the first heavyweight fight with even odds since Frazier - Ali I. I suppose that's possible, but I doubt it. That's without looking up the odds for the FOTC. He also said something like, "Of course Ali was known as Cassius Clay then." Just don't talk, dude.
One close case. Watch until 28:28: This content is protected To be honest, I thought Lampley, Foreman, and Merchant were embarrassing this night. Lampley and Foreman, especially. They fawned over DLH all night and then Foreman suggested a conspiracy against DLH when he lost.
The Showtime guy screaming at the top of his lungs during the 12th round of Pacquaio-Mayweather about what a great fight it was
Mauro Ranallo is god awful every time I hear him call a fight. He's always trying to shoehorn weird pop culture references. I don't get it. Kinda takes me out of the drama of the moment.
Honestly when Larry Merchant said something about being younger and kicking Floyd's ass. It was not during a fight, but he was talking to a professional athlete. Larry must have really thought he was a tough guy when he was younger.
It was after one of Floyds fight. Can't remember which one. In the post fight interview, in the ring, where Larry was famous for asking the tough questions .. Floyd was heated and said to Larry that he never gives him a break on anything ... and then Larry said that ... Here's another famous one from Larry ... " This is really one of the saddest kinds of fights in boxing . Mickey Ward is 31 years old. He's here because he needs the money. He's taking a beating. He's getting humiliated." ….. Larry Merchant Mickey Ward KO Alfonso Sanchez Round 7 , liver shot
Some of Larry's comments were so ridiculous especially later on when I think HBO was struggling more. Back in the 1980s with Leonard and Tompkins he seemed on top of the world. One guy who said ridiculous things but I thought was funny and I liked him was Ferdie Pacheco. A very likable person but his comments were so random and sometimes so dumb. But he said what he felt so it came off ok.
Didn't that incident take place during the post-fight interview after the Ortiz fight, no? Larry getting on Mayweather about the knockout?
Lampley has a treasure trove of these, but it should be pointed out that he called a SHE it ton of fights so he is gonna have a lot on that account alone. Here's my contribution. PS: you can change the video quality to 1080p 60FPS using the gear symbol at bottom of video (some apparently are unaware of this) This content is protected
Did you watch the Bryan Stiverne fight last night? those two idiot announcers Alexander and Campbell were hillarious . They compared Stivernes style to Joe Frazier and Bryans jab to Larry Holmes.
