Carter could be brilliant at his best but I don't think there has ever been a more inconsistent champion aside from maybe Battling Battalino who was also mentioned in this thread. I believe that Carter was connected to the mob and participated in some fixed fights (with him not fighting to the best of his ability). In rematches he usually schooled his opponents. I do think that SuzieQ meant Ike Williams though. Now he could reasonably be rated number 2. Sorry I switched him and Ike Williams name accidently...But I stand by my assessment jimmy carter at his best is a top 10-12 lightweight of all time This content is protected . Ike Williams is my # 2 lightweight of all time. Carter's win over Araujo is a huge win. Carter was not some mob controlled 2nd rater, he was a great fighter with terrific skills, speed, and punching skills.
It could be wrong. Most of the information I've seen surrounding the fight labeled Arguello the favorite, and I remember hearing 2-1, but I don't have a direct source to back that up.
Tommy Burns was a 3/1 underdog against Bill Lang. This is often forgotten when discusing the quality of his title opposition.
That was a unification bout, although Calzaghe had his belt much longer than Lacy had his. Likewise for Hopkins-Trinidad.
Leonard was an underdog v hearns. Rahman an underdog v Lewis. the biggest example most be baldomir being an underdog v Floyd.
Antuofermo/HaglerI I know some disagree, but Vito deserved the 'draw' in my opinion. Hagler cruised down the straight and Antuofermo caught up; And as the defending champ Vito rightly got the benefit of any doubt.
