Where do you guys rank Harry Greb all time ?

I usually follow a couple of simple rules when doing my all time lists...
I never include fighters with 0 or close to 0 footage....
I never put down or insult the greats of the past because they have 0 or close to 0 footage....

Ive always known a so so amount of **** about Greb but recently Ive been learning more.... this guy seems like an unreal fighter, amazing.

He holds victories over great fighters, LHWTs & HWTs & supposedly used to hand Dempsey his ass in sparring & Dempsey`s manager wanted no part of Greb in a real contest.
Shame he died at just 32.

Where do you guys rank Greb ?
Anyone rank him no1 all time ?
Anyone not have him in the top 10 ?

#3. Just behind Robinson and Langford.

 

In terms of resume he is a lock for a top 5 pound for pound slot.

You simply will not find four fighters with better resumes.

In terms of who has the greatest resume ever his only rival in my humble opinion is Sam Langford.

 

Absolutely cannot be outside of a top five P4P list. In the company of Greb, Langford, Robinson, Ezzard Charles..

 

He's right up there for me. Stunning that a man of his stature has not one filmed fight.

 

I personally have him top 3 all time.

 

I have him at 4.

 

Dam the burning of slient films of the 1950's.

 

Top 4 of all time along with Langford, Robinson, and Armstrong.

 

For a man who has no film of his fights, who virtually beaten the best fighters from middleweight to heavyweight, I personally rank Greb as being the greatest middleweight of all time. As for the mythical p4p rankings, he's up there, imo, with Armstrong, Langford, Robinson, and Pep. He wasnt a boxer of skill, he was all about pressure, non-stop pressure, and with average hitting power, he wasnt blowing people away early. However, he out-worked, the best middleweights, light heavyweights, and heavyweights, having an incredible win/loss record over the longest period of time, imo, a fighter ever done.

Are there any written acounts of any of his fights online? From what I have read about him I think he would make my top 10 easy and maby top 5. I wish i new more about him.

too many people write off too many good fighters. Dont get me wrong, i have no problem with a top 5 p for p ranking. But, it is not a certainty. To be the best pound for pound fighter, you have to start by being the best of your time, in your chosen division. Then you have to be better than the 8 other guys in your time, who were the best of their time, in their chosen division. Then, you have to be better than all but 4 others who were the best the best of their time (including some who were the best for more than one decade).

Greb was essentially a middleweight/light heavy. He was beaten under any interpretation by Tunney, who was also a light heavy at the time. Is Greb pound for pound better, just because he was smaller? At middleweight, was he better than Ketchell, Monzon, Hagler, Duran, Leonard etc. Maybe he was, but arguably he wasnt. And this isnt allowing for guys like Louis, Ali, Robinson etc who seem to be commonly accepted without question as the best of their time in their main division.
