Actually Camacho was rated as high as 3rd best pfp during the 80s... I remember KO and Ring rating him right behind Hagler and Curry in the mid 80s.... But Camachos prime wasnt too long and i would rate the guys you mentioned above him... Excet replace Chang with Chitalda, and id probably rate Qawi,Azumah and Fenech above him too and Canizales although his prime when into the 90s also.
At 130, he was one of the best ever. He was a classic case of a man whose speed killed. He knocked guys out because they couldn't see the punches coming. He was almost untouchable at this weight. By the time he fought El Chapo, I'm thinking his hard partying was catching up to him, and he really didn't want to mix it up after the Rosario fight.
Well, I'd probably have him at around 20th myself. But he is still "arguably" top 10 of the 80s. For people who really go off "head-to-head" and "absolute peak" "attributes", and who appreciate Camacho's style and ability, I'm sure there is a reasonable argument to sneak him in at number 9 or 10. As opposed to the original post's question "Is he top 10 Lightweight all-time", where there's simply no argument to be made.
He definitely pissed his career away in the late 80's,but I never saw anything in Camacho that showed me he could have been a great fighter.I really couldn't point to one Hector Camacho performance where I can honestly say I thought he really stood out as an elite fighter.Perhaps an argument could be made for the Limon fight, but that's about it.Everything else was limited to brief flashes like the first round of the Boza-Edwards fight and that first knockdown of Solis - in fights in which he otherwise looked poor in. He's also a fighter I feel that is too often credited with heart and durability. He knew how to survive when the going got tough, but is that something to really celebrate? Running and holding onto his opponent for dear life when faced with adversity? Camacho did nothing to convince me that the Chavez fight would have been any different had it taken place a few years earlier. That horrible performance against a faded and inactive Ray Mancini doesn't do him many favours, either.
I always thought he was highly overrated. Quick of feet and hands, but no power, liked to run, liked to grab.
Actually he had good power early on.. Check out his 1 round ko of the durable John Montes or for that matter most of his kos at JL.... Even rock chinned Vinnie Pazienza commented how suprised he was with Camachos power.... When he would get off his bike and set himself Camacho had decent power even later in his career he just was on his bike so much... Notice early on when he was a JL and would engage more he was knocking guys out,a big reason for that is that he was set and not dancing around like later on in his career.
If Camacho had power he would have been ranked significantly higher. If he didn't snort so much coke he would have ranked significantly higher. As someone said, he was no joke.
Speed kills, and Camacho was in fact that ,"SPEED", and either way you look at it aside from his bull**** ring entrances , I think highly of his style of fighting and think that it all went to his head (no pun intended)
That sums it up. Of course he is top10 LW ATG. In his prime, he was awesome. All of the other crap later in his career blemishes how great he was in him prime at 130.
He beats Floyd at 130 and 35. Looked headed for greatness, But after Rosario he lost a lot of spunk. Still, a great one of the 80's. I got him to 50 p4p all time which might surprise. At super feather he was unbelievable!
