Fighters with the best workrates of all time. I recently watched just about every fight of him that I could find and came to the conclusion that I've never saw a fighter that consistently threw as many punches as him. The guy had the best conditioning that I've ever seen. However, I realize that I don't go as far back as most here. Who are some fighters that match/surpass his workrate and where does he rank among them?
Calzaghe, Henry Armstrong, Marciano, Duran, Pacquiao, Frazier, Pryor, Chavez Sr., Harry Greb. Paul Williams will eventually be inducted into the Hall of Fame. In his prime he was the most feared and avoided fighter in the world because of his freakish size for welterweight. He throws a billion punches, never tires, had an absolute iron chin in his prime and was a nightmare for anyone which is the reason why nobody fought him. His cryptonite though were southpaws - he could not block left hands from lefties and his fights against Sergio Martinez, Erislandy Lara and Carlos Quintana (1st fight) prove that. He only lost to southpaws and after the first Martinez fight which was a gift decision in my opinion (though a close fight), he was past his prime. Paul Williams would give hell to pretty much any welterweight in boxing history (exception: certain southpaws)
Would beat hearns, Leonard, Duran, hagler, mayweather Nd pacquiao When motivated I don't think anyone in history beats him at 147 Just too good
I can't agree with that but I will say that on his A game, he'd make a tough fight for nearly every ATG at welter.
well, this thread got nutty in a hurry. :nut He had great potential but never put it together before the accident cut his career tragically short.
Yeah it did. it is what it is. Other than the mentioned fighters any are there any others that come to mind in terms of ATG workrate? And for the record I think his motor was a bit better than Pacquiao's and he punched with slightly better form than Calzache, although Williams did have times when flicked his jab and hooked in a slapping motion.
Marciano's average punch stats aren't too impressive. Above compubox's average stats for heavyweights, but not by much.
I think Marciano probably wasn't the best example in my list. I agree with you there. It was more his relentlessness than his punch output.
There are no punch stats for Marciano. From available footage, he did seem to throw near or over 100 punches (almost all power hooks) in several late rounds against Ezzard Charles, LaStarza, and Archie Moore. Which is rather elite late round stamina for a HW.
Williams' accuracy left alot to be desired. He landed 23% against a washed up Winky Wright. 31% agaisnt Martinez. 20% against Quitanna. 33% against Phillips. Against the hittable, Margs, he only landed 288 of those 1256 punches(23%). His Power Punching % was equally bad in the 20-30%. Throwing and missing that often is what got him into trouble. Pac misses lots of jabs but usually lands at or over 40% of his power punches.
Williams' punch stats against Winky is not indicative of his overall work for obvious reasons. Winky shelled up the entire fight. That's equal to saying Pac only landed 246/1231 20% against Clottey, or only 30% vs an extremely shot Mosley, 30% again in Marquez 3. And most of Williams' opponents tended to do this. But I'll address the names on your list. The Martinez bout was purely a slugfest in which his activity and effective aggression outweighed Martinez' cleaner counter punches. The Quintana fight was him just getting his ass whooped while being very inaccurate, and Phillips was a punching bag. And I do agree that Williams wasn't very accurate but I only recall him being outlanded twice, making his strategy of volume over accuracy beneficial . Furthermore, my objective wasn't to debate him being the GOAT. I wanted to know where people had him ranked in terms of workrate and condition. This content is protected
