Yes because the three wars with Holy exposed him as glass jawed enough to be knocked out in two by a cautious fighter like Lewis....
He doesn't get credit for beating Gonzalez because Gonzalez never beat anyone ranked. Why on earth should he get credit for the win given Gonzalez spectacular lack of accomplishments.
Coetzer's face wasn't pulp'd from shots to the gonads. Pierre was broken down with clean boxing before a body shot went low accidentally . Reason Bowe began to going to the body is because the multiple head shots he landed were having no effect. It shows the bias people have against Bowe because Frank Bruno committed copious amounts of DQ deserving fouls against Coetzer yet nobody mentions that. The low blow by Bowe was nothing compared to what Bruno did to Coetzer. Btw , how about this - anyone who has to bear hug and back hump Povetkin into submission isn't deserving of a top 75 ranking?
I dont think bowe had any fear of lewis.newman was behind that.bowe took on a guy in jorge gonzalez who ad beat him up worse in the amateurs.riddick had great heart, size, inside boxing skills,power...and he clearly was rallying and wouldve legitimately beat the basket case golota who had a history of quitting when he couldnt put away a defeated foe. The 2 wins v holyfield are big ones. But his time at the top was too limited...not as many names there as id like.....he never faced a murderous puncher...if he had beaten convincingly another 4-5 guys eg foreman (powerpunching great) ,mercer (tough chinned gold medallist),witherspoon (crafty boxer) and a bruno (big puncher)...it would answer a few more things in my book and id have him top 20
Boxing was v unethical in those days...eddie hearn is,a conman but he cons the paying public...not the fighters.....newman and maloney were just chancers...the odious bill cayton was still around as was, still is finkel the abominated.. snakes like king and arum tho ruled....the classy duvas were in terninal decline
Big George against Bowe 1991-1992...that's a tough one. Bowe had all the tools to beat George, but took WAAAYY too many shots. I can't see either George or Bowe getting stopped, but I can see a UD for Bowe (might even knock BG down if he throws the right straight against him as in Holy I. Whenever Bowe straightened that right out, the effects were devastating). Bowe might get knocked down himself, of course.
Holyfield made Bowe's career and vice versa. He was the perfect foil required to make Bowe entertaining while being himself drastically overrated as a heavyweight. Remember that Vander was considered merely an overacheiver, a placeholder, before the Bowe trilogy. His two best pelts were dudes from the 70's. And never forget.... never forget... that Bowe required low blow and an @ss show to finish the pedestrian Coetzer.
I missed the low blow during that fight because dat BUTT was taking up the whole tv screen. Just kidding, Big Daddy, love ya Champ.
Riddick Bowe made TWO appearances in HBOs Legendary Nights series. Holyfield and Golota. Only Bowe and Ray Leonard featured twice for winning performances. Mike Tyson and Tommy Hearns featured twice for two losses. Bowe didn't have the commitment for long term success , but in his prime with Futch in his corner , he could do almost everything and has the potential to beat anybody in history. A H2H top 5 or top 3 in my book. He would have pasted Lewis in the early 90's if that fight had been made. The proof is in Lewis looking bad against geriatric Tucker and getting slept by Olly MaCall.
