Wasn't alive? I interviewed 'vander twice and met with that shitbag Newman to try to get an interview with Bowe. I was also at, and can be seen in a crowd shot of, the Fan Man fight. Whoopee for me. Holyfield was not considered a great, or even better than average, champion. That was the consensus.
I remember [around that time] lots of question marks surrounding Holyfield and he was slowly but surely answering them all affirmatively. There were many doubters, especially after the Cooper fight, but the Bowe 1 fight answered the question of how great a warrior is Evander and can he go toe to toe with someone mucher bigger. This brought up more questions though, Can he adapt his style to beat Bowe and has he got the mindset to comeback from defeat a year later he proved he could, much like Bowe proved he couldn't. After that he lost to Moorer and most people thought he was shot or damaged goods until he beat Tyson. He then became more famous than he had ever been and a lot of revisionism took place about him being dominant earlier in his career, but the truth was, he was inconsistant and still had question marks over him. The wins over Tyson created a frenzy which blew a way any questions or doubts as he had become a national treasure.
Right. Tyson was still considered the man to beat around this time, but as early as the Spinks fight, writers were starting to talk about Holyfield as a real challenge to Tyson's title. Yes they considered him a smaller heavy that went to war with guys, but they saw the skills and toughness the guy had. I think it would be quite easy to find articles all over the internet regarding Holy in the early 90s.
Holyfield was considered an unproven entity early in his heavyweight career. The verdict was out ... however, he beat a very tough Dokes in a classic, crushed Douglas, gave Foreman the beating of his comeback career and then went on to fight bigger men ... Holyfield stood out from all the "smaller guys" because he proved to have an exceptional chin against some of the best and biggest punchers in history ... Lewis, Tyson, Bowe, Mercer, Moorer, even Cooper were all terrific punchers and Evander proved his worth against all of them ... Bowe in my opinion deserved a draw in the second fight, basically never losing to Evander ... I do pick Lewis over Bowe but Lewis was an unusual match up for anyone and while P4P he is not top 15 H2H very few beat him at his best ... simply too big and too good ...
I thought Holyfields career was starting to wind down in 94. The wars were catching up with him. He had to change his style. Beating Tyson actually exposed more of what Tyson was than how much better Holyfield became. He was just as inconsistent after the Tyson fight as he was before.
Funny how on here you are a bit critical to a fighter and you are labelled a hater. Why did Holy manage to face those guys but not Bowe?
Bodhi, cmon you know the deal. Bowe was signed to fight Mercer. Mercer lost in a tuneup against Jesse Ferguson, so Bowe faced Ferguson. Moorer fought Holyfield after Holy lifted the titles from Bowe. Bowe retired before he had the chance to face Tyson and was also signed to face Lewis on two occasions, one after Lewis fight with Mcall and after Bowes fight with Golota. BTW Bowe knocked out Bert Cooper in the second round.
Bowe was a fine fighter with hall of fame skills but lacked any kind of longevity, he was shot by 96' which is alarming when you consider him being only 29 and his two fights with Golota are considered by many as losses. Style wise he matched up well with Holyfield but would often struggle with fighters who presented him with motion. Not top ten but deserves an honourable mention.
Moorer(at hw), bowe and mercer among the. Bggest punchers in history? Is it a joke? Holyfield gave Foreman a beating? Nonsense.
apparently he was...it seems he was rated #1 in 92 & 95 and 2/3 in 94/95...sounds like yes, he was “arguably” the best during this period. https://boxrec.com/media/index.php/The_Ring_Magazine's_Annual_Ratings:_Heavyweight--1990s
