Well spoken, boyd! Nevertheless, I was quite disappointed with Ding's performance in the ring. He could have dethroned Arslan if he had had a serious game plan. Arslan is not invincible. He has quite a lot of weak spots.
Well of course it´s not good for an athlete to be detached emotionally. They should be burning with passion for becoming the best! While I agree that some sort of realism is needed to reach the top and that solme kinds of motivational talk can be totally worthless BS, I think you are too hard on your point of view and that there is a middle ground. A boxer for example should not believe he is so great and naturally talented he doesn´t need to train hard for fights - but he kind of has to believe in himself a little beyond realism. It really depends on how be belief is shown. For example, if you realize your mistakes in a fight, but are certain you can correct them and improve beyond your limitations and win a rematch, that is usually good. If you´d just believe you are really a lot better than your opponent and were just really unlucky to lose, that´s not good. Underdogs do win fights sometimes. I think if they were totally realistic about their chances, they´d feel unmotivated and said chances would decline. When we talk about a fighter who just showed up to collect a paycheck, they were probably being realistic, but he´ll are we pissed off at them! Many posters here are telling Ding to look at what he was doing wrong and correcting it. That is constructive and certainly not BS motivation. Saying Arslan just lucked out and Ding would just walk through him in a rematch would be BS though.
We're pretty much in agreement. :thumbsup There are a few superstitious types on here though, notably Blocky, who seem to think that nobody can succeed at an elite level in any sport without having a totally unrealistic view of their own invincibility and infallibility. I believe he actually said Ding could beat Tyson if he believed it hard enough. That wish-upon-a-star mumbo jumbo is more so what I was targeting. Obviously learning from mistakes and being optimistic about one's improvement is a very good thing.
Yes we are totally in agreement here. If all you needed to succeed was to believe, people would have evolved to be super persistent believers wouldn´t they Ulitmately you always need two things to reach the top 1) An abundance of talent 2) Extremely hard training
To get the KO you have to get the big hit. That ain't so easy at the upper levels of the division when you have as little skill as Ding.
I truly tend to believe that I am the head of our family,but................whenever we enter a shop my wife always proves me wrong. I guess that I am not a super persistent believer at heart.:? Damn! Life is tough, isnt it !
This entire thread is terrible. Here at ESB, we support our own. Any idea the small minority of people that actually ever get to fight for a title???? Whether we felt he had a chance or not (with Darnell, there is ALWAYS a punchers chance...the guy hits like a mac truck), he is one of us...and a great guy on top of it all. He is always humble on here, always freely coversating with the rest of us, taking our criticism and our praise...always showing the type of person he is. THAT is why we cheer for Ding...doesnt matter if he is 50-1 or 1-50. So a few of you picked the fight right...and most of us didnt....so the **** what. While you now ride your high horse of invicibility oh great and wise gurus of boxing....the rest of us will welcome him back to the forums with open arms.... And ya know what...if he fights again....most of us will pick him to win by KO again. Dont really matter who he is fighting... Always be our champ Ding....win or lose.
Sorry, but this is pure nuthugging. What I want to discuss is a realistic forecast of a fight no matter if it is an ESB Poster or not. I too think that Ding is a very nice, clever and friendly person (from what I´ve read in the forum an have seen on TV) but to say "most of us will pick him to win by KO again. Dont really matter who he is fighting" has nothing to do with boxing knowledge but with nuthugging... ...and now you can blame me...
tbh with all due respect to ding, (and r4espect is given to any boxer), i have always thought he is a good "contender" or a good B fighter. haye would have murdered him and enzo would likly have boxed his ears of, he has power but foot work and dynamic pace a little lacking.
thank you pharaoh. How mother****ers can come on here and be like 'i told you so' is beyond me to a guy who actually posts here. Doubt these dudes would have predicated ding to beat ndowdou. They probably said ding would lose every fight until they finally got one right. Ding will be back.
No nuthugging is done all over this site. What picking him to win against whomever he fights is called backing your own. Learn the difference, there are plenty of examples of nuthugging on here. :verysad
Well there can be a difference between backing someone to win and actually thinking they will win. I´d back Ding against say, David Haye and hope for an upset but I´d still think it more likely Haye would win than Ding. Now I think any ridicule of Ding on this forum is uncalled for. He´s a good boxer who has gotten far in the sport. Losing a world title fight does certainly not mean you are a loser by any means.
