It isnt just strength. It conditions muscles so fighters can take punches better, and in general makes a fighter more explosive. It wont make you a big puncher if you're not born with it, but it will help. Thats the point. I cant understand top level fighters in this day and age not having an S+C coach. In every other pro sport, its taken as read that yo have an S+C coach. Le Bron James traisn with hios teams S+C coach...he doesnt have a choice in the matter
Fine, keep living in the stone age. Boxers, like those in EVERY OTHER PROFESSIONAL SPORT, will continue to evolve their training habits as sports science improves.
I think he'd be every bit the monster he was then. Our HS football team scrimmaged his. When we were putting on uniforms in the locker room before the scrimmage, at 17, he was the closest thing to Superman I'd ever seen. His muscles had muscles. He rumbled over and through us like a tank. Surprised he didn't leave tread marks up my chest.
Not lifting weights wont make them any less vulnerable to getting hit on the button either....whats your point?
I only got to this point in the thread when I just had to comment. I am in total agreement with this. It is entirely possibel that Maidana hit that lift on a smith machine. 440 on a smith machine feels like about 315 on a standard bar/bench. Sekbach did a video with Rios once where he(Sekbach) hit 205X2 on a smith machine and only lowered it half way down.
My point is: lifting weights won't cushion shots to the body or the chin. You can have a six-pack 'n the neck of buffalo, but the ref will still count ten over you.
In addition Larsen's inroad of 225X45 seems low for a 670 raw single. Several guys at the NFL combine hit around 40 reps with 225 and they hit around 450-500 at best for a single. My best was 225X42 and I could barely hit 410 for a single at a bodyweight of 228, in my mid thirties.
Do you not find it co-incidental that guys with bull necks dont get KO'd as much? Tyson,Holyfield,Toney etc all have thick powerful necks that cusion the blows. All hardening the muscles of your body will help you take shots to the body.
You mean like Gene Fullmer against Ray Robinson, i? Or Brock Lesner, whose neck would support bridge?
Anything that improves rate of force development like heavy weight and explosive exercises have been shown to do, increases agility.
