For me it's Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns. He had a stare that could melt water and freeze ice. Absolutely horrifying.

The man that conquered him, that is Iran Barkley also had a frightening stare.

Do you actually watch boxing for boxing?

Or is the stares and physiques that do it for you?

I knew someone would say Hearns (and I cannot disagree) but I always think of what Randy Shields said of when Hearns tried to stare him down during the referee instructions for their welterweight fight.

Shields had already fought Leonard, Benitez and some other top guys. He wasn’t a guy who could be intimidated (and though he was outgunned by Hearns, the fight showed he wasn’t scared).

Someone asked him about the staredown and he said (I might be a word off here or there, going of memory, but this is the gist of it): “It’s all I could do to keep from laughing. I’m supposed to be scared? What’s he going to do, hit me? He’s going to do that anyway.”

This is the mentality of boxers. I am sick of reading X was afraid of Y... Maybe? But do you really think the stare off was why? like ****

Liston and Tyson had great stare downs. Recently speaking Vitaly K haha good one. At the lower weight they do not intimidate each other like the heavyweights can but Hearns could.

Terry Norris had a mean and pissed off look at stare downs. Idk how affective it was though since he really didn’t look at all that intimidating

You beat me to it - Duran's stare at LW was indeed a sight to behold. He looked mean and ready to tear his opponent apart at times!

As stated, Liston worked the stare down as did his doting apprentice Foreman. Cool part was, Ali diffused them both, 10 years apart, with his own snarling contempt and smack talk during ref instructions. Foreman’s head looked like it was going to explode from pent up rage.

Not so much a stare down but Ali and Joe smiling, talking up a smack storm just before opening bell was an integral pert of the show in Manila.

There were also anti stare down guys. Norton for one, comes to mind. From the fights I’ve seen, Ken, an advocate of positive thinking pointedly avoided eye contact during ref instructions.
