Comparing a 45 year old Duran who's prime ended 15 years earlier to Roy Jones who was just coming off possibly his best performance (winning a portion of the heavyweight title by near shutout) is ludicrous. Jones may not have been at his peak but he was not shot at all. Also for the record Tarver did not have Jones' number, he didn't exactly prove himself much better in the ring. He lost the first fight, knocked him out in the return, then struggled to beat him in the 3rd fight where they both looked utterly ****.
He had one of the biggest wins of his career against Ruiz, and did so very impressively, but that was not Jones at the peak of his powers, no matter what the performance suggested against a tailor made opponent. He had been on the slight decline since about 2001 or 2002, that was his last great performance. His aging was sped up greatly by draining from HW back to LHW at the advanced age that he was(speedy boxers age quickest), and it showed greatly even in the first Tarver fight that he won. If you say otherwise, then that is, in fact, ludicrous. He was clearly a shot fighter by the Johnson fight, and clearly falling apart during the Tarver trilogy, the first fight showing that clearly enough. Struggling badly with a fighter(and showing lesser physical ability than years in past) he'd have starched or shut out a few years earlier should show that a man is on the decline in a dramatic way. So I may have been exagerrating when I compared it to Duran/{azienza, but I was merely ipointing out that a shot/faded fighter losing to an opponent in his prime doesn't exactly make the opponent the foil.
frankie randall/ jcc randall beat him clearly in the first fight, and was on his way to another win in the second imo if not for that dubious technical decision where chavez said he could not continue.
Yeah, Frankie Randall really got screwed the second time against Chavez. This is one of the reasons I have a hard time worshipping Chavez like a lot of you guys do. First, it was the Taylor fight, with Meldrick 3 seconds away from victory, and that bull**** stoppage, then it was the draw after getting spanked by the Pea, then it was this outrageous crap the second time with Randall. Frankie Randall should have been awarded a tko victory when Chavez refused to continue, or at the very least, a tecnical decision. That's why, in recent posts, I've maintained that guys like Carlos Ortiz and Ken Buchanan would have beaten Chavez at his peak.

Ruben Olivares vs. Bobby Chacon Yes, I know Bobby finally beat 'Rockaby Ruben' by decision in 1977. But Olivares torched Chacon in 2 rounds in 1975 and kayoed him in 9 rounds in 1973. I was a big Chacon fan but admit that the Mexican great basically had his number. By 77' Ruben's partying and accumulation of fights had taken its toll. He did knockout a young up and coming Jose Luis Ramirez and in his very next fight the tough Shig Furuyama so I guess he wasn't totally finished.
