There are some guidelines he should have followed. Anyone with above average power Roy should not fight. He did well against counterpunchers since they sat back and this style worked well with Roy. There is just a set standard of guys he can beat. The nonagressive guys who do not punch hard and win decisions and are slick. Those guys he would beat because he is slicker, as is what happened with Ruiz.

Yes , and taking into account roys legendary iron chin and punch resistance he would have walked right through Dempseys left hook and Marciano's suzy Q

Well starting with the obvious -

John Ruiz - WBA Heavyweight Champion - been there done that UD
Old George Foreman - WBA Heavyweight Champion - Just pot shotting and moving UD
Nikolai Valuev - WBA Heavyweight Champion - Haye/Holyfield Tactics in the US UD
Old Evander Holyfield - WBA Heavyweight Champion - He beat Ruiz so maybe

Other than that I got nothing . . . Jones just wasnt a Heavyweight. the only champions he could have ever fought and beat were all WBA Paper champs who were either not that good, big but talentless or old and out of their prime

It's easier said than done to pot shot and move around old George Foreman, he made guys like Bert Cooper who was a valiant gatekeeper, crumble and quit.

I think old George would've realized RJJ has the resistence of a cornflake, and go after him more than needed be to stop Roy, and when you have a guy of Georges size and strength chasing you down, with Roys punch resistence, he's bound to get KTFO early.

Jones has no chance against Foreman or Tyson, every chance against Ali. If you had to pick one true HW legend that Jones could beat Ali is your best bet.

Ruiz was better than Maskiev, Peter, Ibragimov, Chageav, and Briggs. In addition to those I think he also beats Byrd, Haye and SNV, he would have a shot against Sanders, and Brewster.

    Steroids or no?

Without the juice, none of them, including Johnny Ruiz.

Why cause I tell it like it is? Ruiz was bad but the others listed were just as bad or even worse than him.

you are right Ruiz was sort of BAd and he is Prime example of Cherry Picking at its finest when RJJ fought him.

I would also add Bent, Berbick and Smith to the list. How were any of the other guys I listed any better than Ruiz though? They either lack skill, or the punch to beat Jones. Could he beat a great HW champ? Hell no, but at his best he can certainly beat mediocre champs.

Ruiz was in his prime when he fought RJJ, he was 38 and well past it when he met Haye.

Roy could also have beat some of the guys that fought in the 1950s to 1970s. Patterson, Liston, Frazier.

In the last 15-20 years he could have beat many of the 2nd rate guys like Chagaev, Ibragimov, Maskev etc.
