Far enough, but this has to be balanced with the big shots he did take. The fight against Vitali is a good example, he was hit plenty by a huge guy with an extremely impressive KO ratio and he didn't go anywhere. In fact in the 6th he actually started walking him down.

There was never big problem with Lewis' chin. If he was 'chinny', he'd have lost by KO to Bruno, Mercer, Holyfield, Vitali as they landed hard shots and they could hit hard.

I can kind of give Lewis a bit of a pass for the McCall loss, because a fair few historic fighters would have an additional loss or two, with modern officiating.

The Rahman loss has to be regarded as a mark against his chin.

It is true that abberations can happen. Even guys with good/great chins have been stopped by one punch.

For example, Doug Dewitt was inexplicably stopped by Jose Quinones by a punch he didn't see coming.

Also, guys who have been stopped one shot, have gone on to win or fight very competitevly fights in which they absorbed a lot of shots.

For example, Hearns was destroyed by Hagler and Barkley. However, he absorbed a lot in narrowly oupointing James Kinchen and took hellacious shots in the second Ray Leonard fight.

Roger Mayweather was kod by one shot by Rocky Lockridge and Rafael Pineda, yet took many flush shots from decent puncher Harold Brazier, before winning a close decision. He also absorbed a lot from JC Chavez in their second fight without going down, and fought pretty well, landing quite a bit on Chavez.

He also lasted with Kostya Tzyu who, while overrated, had good power.

Hearns and Mayweather are looked back at as "Chinny."

    Lewis was hurt by Bruno.

Mercer was much smaller than Lewis and had good, but not great power.

Vitally beat on Corrie Sanders for several rounds and finally stopped him. Sanders had been kod by Nate Tubbs earlier in his career, and also stopped by Rahmann. He didn't have a great chin and Vitali stuggled to eventually stop him.

I think anyone who gets one shotted more than once, including Lewis, is, rightfully labeled as "Chinny."

I don't buy the "lost his concentration" excuse.

Or the silly statement that "Technically, he wasn't one shotted by McCall because the referee stopped the fight."

Well, Hearns got up from the Barkley and Hagler knockdowns, but was deemed unfit to continue because, and forgive me for not being politically correct, he was "On ***** Street."

Similarly, Lewis was "On ***** Street" when he got up from the devastating knockdown against McCall.

And, against Rahmann, he didn't beat the count.

What about other guys who were never kod or one shotted?

Do you think these guys never lost their concentration during a fight? Of course they did.

Also, I have seen a few guys get caught walking right into shots, or hit with great punches they didn't see - and nothing happened. Why? Because of possessing rock solid chins.

Very good post but what I mean many people use to say that someone has glass chin when boxer has decent or good chin.

For me examples of fighters with bad chins at HW are Michael Grant, Maurice Harris, Bruce Seldon etc.

Lewis had much better punch resistance than these fighters yet he's often named 'glass-chinned' only because of these 2 losses.

This post has pretty much closed the thread imo. Nothing to be added or subtracted really.

Sanders had one legitimate KO loss and that was to Tubbs. He had a TKO against Vits and Rahman. Oh, and the last fight of his career he was stopped by a body shot when he was the size of Dustin Nichols and hadn't seen a situp in three years.

One KO loss in an entire career does not a bad chin make.

    His chin was OK.

I wouldn't say he said Sanders had a "bad" chin.
