Chavez was'nt the type to dehydrate himself to make weight. He did'nt cut weight the way fighters do now, and then rehydrate by fight time. The weight Chavez usually weighed at officially, was pretty much the weight he stepped into the ring at..... Chavez did his training old school and really did'nt use the modern methods that fighters today use with weight lifting and strenghth training. Its no secret that the Duva's strenghth trainers to add muscle to fighters stepping up in weight. I dont think there is any question that Whitaker had the advantage as far as strenghth training regimen is concerned, giving him the advantage the hire the weight the fight was fought at. For the fight, Whitaker officially weighed in at 145, Chavez weighed at 142. .....I'd have to think that Whitaker most likely put on more weight by fight time. Chavez was asked before and after the Whitaker fight, why he weighed just 142 lbs when he could have put more weight on and added strength. Chavez answer, I trained to peak at fight time, and my body physically peaked could only give me 142 lbs. Chavez just was'nt a welterweight, you look at his record even after the Whitaker fight, he looked lethargic anytime he was above the 144-145 range. My guess is that by fight time, Whitaker held a 6 or 7 pound advantage. Thats a significant advantage imo.....and that pounds Whitaker exceeded was a strenghth advantage. My belief is that Whitaker would have had a much tougher time holding Chavez off had they both weighed at 140 lbs, which obviously was a better fighting weight for both fighters, but more for Chavez, as Whitaker's record shows he did well even fighting with his weight at the welterweight limit of 147 lbs.
The flaw here is that Whitaker rarely relied on any kind of strength to beat Chavez, just movement and boxing ability. Chavez was the one trying out the roughing tactics as usual.
Whitaker completely outclassed Chavez. Chavez was the #1 P4P going into the bout. Whitaker didn't "run". It would have been a better match up at 140 but I still think Whitaker would win regardless of weight.
Usually, its Chavez using his stamina and strenghth to push around his opponent. Chavez' style definitely is to get physical on the inside, but when the other fighter is a darn good one, and has a weight advantage on you, that becomes increasingly more difficult to do. ......as we saw in the Whitaker-Chavez fight is that when Whitaker did stand still and bodied up with Chavez, Whitaker was'nt being pushed around, and you can attribute that to Whitaker being the heavier fighter. It does'nt make Whitaker the better inside fighter in this fight, but it does make matters easier for Whitaker that he held a weight advantage for situations where Chavez wanted to bully him on the inside. Would things have been more to Chavez' favor had the fight taken place at 140 lbs?? I say yes, you probably say no, but we will never know for sure will we? We can only speculate, by looking at the weights that each fighter was efficeint in!
I will ask the question I always ask when this subject is brought up... To those that scored it close for Chavez or a draw....PLEASE POST YOUR ROUND BY ROUND....not your total score (114-114 or 6-6) an actual round by round. I will follow yours with my round by round...and hell, I will even post the vids of each round.... But as with this type of thing...NONE of you will, none of you EVER do.
I haven't watched this fight in almost 2 years I believe. Its just very uneventful and can't bring myself up to watch it again, specially not crappy youtube quality.
This fight should have taken place back in late 89 early 90. Chavez didn't do much in this fight. Pea did enough damage (even though it was close to nothing)and made Chavez miss alot. Pea won this boring ass fight. Chavez was just a name by then, honestly. After beating Taylor he had it made. He looked lazy even in the fights he won.
See, thats like asking Pac-fans to give reasons why Manny would defeat Duran @ lightweight. Just wont happen
PM Sweet_Sientist, and he'll give you my round by round. I happen not to save my scorecards, so I could'nt give you a round by round at the moment. .....but I've debated with Scientist so much on this issue that he has my scorecard recorded in his memory bank! A few years back, Sceintist brought out punch stats numbers that I never rely on and through them on my face.....to which I studied and through them back at him showing hiim that even through punchstat which I find unreliable, you could make a strong case for Chavez....... .....Scientist then agreed.....punchstats are unreliable! :yep Scientist, bring out my scorecard!!! :hi:
Posting a round by round breakdown will not take the 45 minutes. And with 3 guys trying to discredit my opinion will only make this many hours long. How about you offer yourself to be the first to give a round by round then?
