I agree with Vergil Ortiz. However, I'm confused about what gatekeeping means? Like popular boxers that duck everyone?
There are multiple in each division, it's no fun to name everyone and repeat the same over and over so I'll say one from each: HW: Chisora CW: I have no clue LHW: Yarde SMW: Ryder MW: Derev.... JMW: Harrison WW: Avenesyan JWW: Martin LW: Commey SFW: edit: Valdez I don't pay enough attention to anything lower to have a legit position
Good question. Basically, gatekeeper is the guy who is on the top level but he can't get W against the top 10 in his division, so if you beat gatekeeper you can be challenging for the title or you can get among the top 5, top 10 I think you got a point.
He absolutely is. he's a live dog. All gatekeepers are, they aren't journeymen. They are a step above, they'll beat mostly everyone except the elite for their division. They may even get a win or two over a former champ, sometime actually will (like Harrison), or they'll push an actual champ to the brink but won't win the big one, or they might get the big one but lose it immediately. That's what gatekeeper means to me......................a very tough out, just short of elite
Michal Cieslak might be a good example of a CW gatekeeper, though that might be unfair to the man as he only has two losses.
I'll admit my current CW knowledge is limited, the only guys I know I wouldn't call gatekeepers, but contenders.
I can see Tony Yoka as gatekeeper in the next few years because his chin is gone. He should retire IMO But I can see Yoka as the next Chisora or Takam (Takam beat him ironically)
A boxer can go through many phases in their career From a prospect to a contender to a champ From a prospect to a contender to a gatekeeper to a journeyman or a bum I do not believe a former world champion should be described as a gatekeeper because a gatekeeper by definition is not quite good enough to win a world title or generally even challenge for a world title It feels wrong to describe a once beautiful woman who used to be a model in her prime before her beauty withered as a model and likewise it does to describe a former world champion who is long past their prime as a gatekeeper It doesn't just feel wrong it feels disrespectful We really should treat these warriors who represent our sport with more respect, much more, especially those who once rose to the greatest heights to achieve their dream of becoming world champions They don't give world titles away you know Unless that is we're talking about boxers who have been cursed with below punch resistance or power Or are cowardly cheating human octopuses with a mortal fear of getting hit who will use every dirty unmanly cowardly trick in the book to avoid, god forbid, their opponent being able to land punches on them, in addition to octopus grabbing, worm hunting ie. ducking below waist level, spoiling by stiff-arming, leading with the shoulder, forearm, or head etc. Have gloves, won't travel deck-stacking divas who refuse to sign on the dotted line unless they have all the advantages in their favour These massive weight bullies who forge careers out of hunting leprechauns and when they do move up in weight to become multiple weight champs they're either still bigger than their opponents or at worst the same size as them Those kind of boxers are totally fair game and we must mock, ridicule, verbally abuse and hound them out of the sport at every opportunity we get
Interesting point! Can you name a few fighters that came to your mind when you were writing this text?
didnt age well...xd I mean WBC Silver isnt such a big thing nowadays...but he is on 5 win streak.... Franklin vs Ajagba would be interesting
I see many comments about Parker, how he got gatekeeper from november 2023 (before Wilder fight). Man this didnt age well also xdd
