Andre Ward. He defeated the man considered to be the best in the division in Mikkel Kessler. Lucian Bute - while looking good has been fighting everyone but the best of the division. He was almost KO'd by Andrade who was handled quite readily by Kessler. Until Bute fights the super six fighters I don't see how he can be ranked number one.
I choose Bute only because he is showing some great power as of late. But it is a toss up between ward and Bute with dirrell a close third
Froch probably has the best over all resume'. I'd pick Bute head to head over anyone in the division. Ward is the most over rated fighter on the planet.

Why does many people keep saying Bute? Andre Ward is the best, cause he beat the number 1 supermiddle at that time, who has Bute beaten? He lost to Andrade the first fight and won the second one, that does´nt even put him ahead of Mikkel kessler who has far greater wins.
I would say Ward right now, at this point. He dominated the favorite and so that is also on his side. Not to mention, probably the two fighters that you could argue be number 1 at SMW just lost recently (Abraham and Froch) so with those two losing I say Ward is probably the number 1 fighter at SMW....for now.
