Look at it this way, if Lopez had the same skills but was the same size as Calzaghe - same height, reach, weight - who would win?
Do you think Ricardo Lopez is a few levels above Rocky Marciano and Carmen Basilio in terms of skills? Do you rate him higher than those two?
I don't think there is a clear cut answer. Alvarez had success with educated pressure and a high work rate, why couldn't Joe Calzaghe?
That doesn't matter one bit and you're avoiding my question just to suit yourself, just like you (and others, me included) could be accused of doing to the original question - we will not know what the OP was asking until he rewords its properly.
:huh I don't think there is an obvious answer to your question. Fights are determined by styles more often than not, why should a hypoethical match-up between Joe Calzaghe and a super-sized Ricardo Lopez be any different? The TS asked a relatively straight forward question. Who do you credit as being the greater fighter? Who do you rank higher on your P4P list? I credit Calzaghe as being the greater fighter, I consider him to be higher on the P4P list, all as a result of what I consider to be a superior resume. Everything else is secondary.
Calzaghe and Ricardo Lopez are fighters I have watched on tv so I have an answer when they are in question. I aint seen much of Marciano and Basilio, but maybe if you ask those in the classic forum they would give you a detailed answer. But like I said, based on their resume's, and their P4P rank is roughly about the same IMO, and I dont see it as a problem being given to either one.
* Because styles are based on skill set and overcoming a bad stylistic match-up is based on ability/skills. ** No he didnt, hence why nobody can seem to agree on anything My question of the match-up simplifies everything a bit more. Secondary only by personal opinion.
'That doesn't matter' bit on my other comment is in relation to you talking about a 105 Calzaghe fighting in the 105 division at the same time as Lopez and dominating. It does not have any relevance.
Hypothetical match up between Ricardo Lopez vs Calzaghe is pretty dumb IMO. Lopez even at 5 ft 5, usually had a height advantage so boxed different. if they have a hypothetical match up, would he be taller than Calzaghe or shorteratsch Also would his reach be proportional to his height? its all bull****.
You have over-simplified it. You think saying, "if the two fighters were the same size, who wins?" is the definitive way to to determine which fighter was greater? Let's actually look at the facts; who they fought, and who they beat? Is this not the most logical way?
No. Otherwise he would've asked 'Which fighter had the greater career' because when you look at who they fought and who they beat you have to look at it in the context of the era of the division they were fighting in.
We are going round in circle as everything here is going to be more or less subjective. Unless you want to take days analysing facts.
