Aye, "destroys" is the wrong word. Guerrero would have some success on the back foot and trying to keep it long, but I'd think Marquez would take a 8-4 type decision over the distance.
There's no way Allegedly would let Burns fight Marquez. Would be a fun fight, but Ricky would be outgunned, beaten up and stopped. But it'd be the best learning experience of his career.
Yeah you gotta favour Marquez still but he isn't getting any younger. Would be a great fight to make right now.
When I say destroy, I didn't mean to imply a 1st round KO or anything. What I meant is that I'd see Marquez completely dominating the action, possibly picking up a mid-late KO or if not a very, very wide points decision. The thing is, in my mind, Guerrero has picked up a lot of plaudits for his admittedly very good performance over Katsidis. But the Aussie is pretty limited and was perfectly suited to Guerrero's back foot tactics. However, someone who makes Guerrero think a bit and who has the skills to outbox him is his worst nightmare in my opinion- I consider him to be a very weak ring general and Marquez is the perfect fighter to capitalise on that. I could see him making it embarassing.
Yeah that's a distinct possibility but it relies on Marquez being in top shape and able to go for 12 rounds. I know he lasted ok against Pac but I think he trained partcularly hard for that fight, for obvious reasons, and he was highly motivated. The last time he went 12 rounds before that was the second Diaz fight and he gassed badly towards the end of that fight. The Pac fight has gone now and he didn't get the decision he feels he deserved and he may have resigned himself to not getting another shot at Pac. I'm not too sure he has much left. He's getting on a bit now and he's had his fair share of hard fights. I fear he may be passed his best. I may be wrong. I hope I'm wrong because I'd like to see him fight at the top level for as long as possible. Great fighter. My favourite fighter, in fact.
All good points. I think Marquez will be fairly aggressive, allow Guerrero to back-pedal, feint and draw the lead from Robert and then be smashing him up with counters all night. Is that how you see it going?
I suppose we wouldn't know about Marquez's condition or motivation until a fight like this actually happened but I just think if you get at least a good version of JMM, not even as good as in the Pacquiao fight, he would have more than enough to beat Guerrero. But if his level did slip as you say because it's not a Pac fight, then maybe he would have some struggles. Guerrero is a nice fighter don't get me wrong and is established at world level but I reckon that the top p4p version of Marquez that we know is just a class above, at any weight they fight. Personally, if I was Marquez I'd try and make Guerrero come onto the front foot and try and press the action with the jab early on. When I've seen the Ghost do this in fights before, in his featherweight/superfeatherweight days, he often gets himself into a Wlad-esque robotic state of jab, jab, jab, straight left. Except that it's nowhere near as effective as Klitschko in maintaining distance and nullifying his opponent. I'd expect someone of Marquez's class to comfortably slip the jab and get into range to counter with combinations. I also have doubts as to the mental strength of Guerrero after the Yordan fight. I know he's came on since then but I just have the sneaky feeling that if he's getting outworked and outfought, he'd retreat into a shell. If that were to happen vs Marquez, I could see JMM taking it into the inside and completely dominating the fight possibly, getting the stoppage along the way. All hypothetical of course lol::good) but I just feel that there isn't a way for Guerrero to outthink Marquez and cause him any problems that he couldn't overcome.
Yeah fair points. I thought he'd find Diaz and Katsidis a lot easier than he did. They both gave him trouble early in their fights. Of course, he stepped it up a gear and finished them off. Just think Guerrero has a bit more class and skill than either Diaz or Katsidis who are both aggressive fighters and not the most skilled boxers. But you're right, even a 'good' version of Marquez should be enough to beat Guerrero, but you just never know. That's what makes it such a good fight though.
Marquez struggles with boxers. I think he'd beat Guerrero but it's not as much of a foregone conclusion as (say) it would be vs Maidana, Matthysse, Alexander etc.
