I don't think Meldrick Taylor had the best management either. Such as the decision to having him fight Terry Norris, after Taylor was showing signs of decline and not being ideal at WW in his title defense against Glenwood Brown. To have him move up again, a couple pounds to fight a quicker, harder hitter in Norris, was an awful decision. I think Reid's management just cashed him out in the Trinidad fight, due to Reid's eye problems.
to this day I say that if they hadnt put vargas in ther with Trinidad so you he would have been something else
He was thrown into the lions den against tito before he really had a chance to be the best he could be, he went into a fight with tito with a record of 20-0... not bad but titos record was 39-0 if i remember correctly, he needed more time brfore fighting somone of titos caliber
I voted for Ike, but he was always going to self destruct. Vargas was always going to be a fat ass and never did have the best of whiskers. David Reid was a very good fighter but surely that eye would be a problem? Aaron Pryor was a fantastic fighter who was always going to have a shortish career due to his all action style, 2 wins over arguello, one over cervantes and a dominant reign isnt really unfulfilled potential. Whilst Valero always looked like he was going to be chinned at some point (still pisses me off to think about what happened)
Yeah I do agree he didn't live up to his full potential but he's still one of the best 140-pounders match-up wise and a HOF'er. Everyone else on the list just came up short of becoming HOF'ers.
pryor?how daft is that?!he's an atg, ffs!i believe reid could've been a quality operator for some time if it were not for the eye problems that blighted his short career.had great feet, handspeed and punching power, and no little heart,too...
He had already been IBF champ for 2 years, he had two close but solid wins over Wright and Quartey, not to mention that was Tito's last fight at 154 because he wanted to go up to middle, so if Vargas wanted him it had to be then unless he wanted to follow him up to middleweight. Like I said, he was a good fighter but he would have never beaten anybody of Tito or DLH's caliber even if he had been given some easier fights for a while. Though clearly not what he once was in his fights with Mosley and Mayorga, he still wasn't even 30.
