I think Roy Jones has probably beaten the better list of fighters, but for whatever its worth, Floyd has never lost and has won more belts in more divisions, or at least I think its close.
Talent and skills wise, it would be close. But who between the two, in their primes, would I gladly shell out $50.00 to watch their PPV fight, I'd have to say definitely Roy Jones Jr.
Big thing I see in Mayweathers favour is technically, he is far superior. Roy was so brilliantly unorthodox, but I'll take Floyd's text book style and old school shell defence any day. Just fundamentally better in a pure boxing sense. Roy was a better athlete and had a more illustrious career though, for sure. Mayweathers athleticism is often overrated a bit imo, its his skill that makes him look so good and untouchable as much as his speed.
In terms of overall talent, it just depends how you want to look at it. Roy Jones is one of the most gifted athletes in history... and that goes for any sport. His combination of speed and pinpoint accuracy with power was unbelievable. Floyd, on the other hand, is great in his own way.... I don't know, at first I was going to vote for Roy, but at the same time Floyd is undefeated as well. In fact, I'm going to vote Roy just because of the sheer dominance he would bring to his fights. Also because Roy has the bigger wins in Hopkins and Toney.
Roy Jones Jr. was better than Floyd is. He had more talent, more strength, more speed and alot more balls and flamboyance. He was basically what Floyd is trying to be. Roy was the Michael Jordan, Floyd is basically Kobe.....if Kobe NEVER dunked the ball. I think a very common mistake made by far too many is the tendancy to underestimate Roy's 'boxing skills'. Watching him strutting around the ring like a game ****, sticking his head out, holding his hands low, touching his foot leads many to believe that he lacked basic fundamental boxing discipline. But in reality, fundamentals are a starting point, and for many perfecting those fundamentals can bring alot of success. Few others go beyond them and can afford to risk abandoning them in order to do something spectacular. Jones had the ability to fight without relying on fundamentals. This DOES NOT mean he couldn't always go back to them if he needed. Jones beat two hall of famers in their prime. Jones excited the crowd, and scared his opponents stupid. Floyd fought castillo and corrales in their prime and many believe he lost 1 of those fights. When a prime Jones fought, there was no doubt who won. Jones was better.
In accomplishments, Roy wins right now. Though he was never in fights as big as Mayweather-De la Hoya or Mayweather-Hatton. This is getting close. As a fighter, Mayweather is more complete. He has better technique and fundamentals, and a better defense.
Who cares how "big" the fights are? Prime Toney and Prime Hopkins are much better wins and tougher fights than a "washed up" Hoya and Hatton.
Have you seen a prime Jones fought. Athleticism is part of defense :deal Jones rarely ever got hit clean. His defense was top of the food chain.
Those two are my personal faves and I have seen lots of fights between the both of them. I think Floyd is build to last to the bitter end while Jones is build more like a bell curve. He got too used to counting on his natural gifts (quickness and reflexes) that he if he loses anyone of those he will take a nose dive in skill... They both got great Resumes but Floyd have quick speedy opponents while Jones got hard hitting opponents.
