I'm pretty confident about those two. I thought that Holmes and Marciano were placed too high, but this is all very reassuring (for Holmes at least)
I have Holmes in the lower part of the top ten. The guy defended the title against WAY to many 15- or 10-0 fighters like David Bay. Holmes was picking on the highschoolers for his title defenses. The same reason I dont rank Patterson that high. Holmes rein is just like Patterson;s but extended to 20 title defenses.
I agree with the first half for the most part, but his oppontants during his title reign were a little better than Pattersons. Witherspoon, Cooney, and Shavers were all good fighters and a couple others were okay. But still, Holmes fought TOMATO CANS way too many times to be put in the top 3.
Liston is a good choice. Depending on who you rank second, of course. Foreman and Holmes are up there, too.
I think the word journeyman is a better description for Ledoux than tomato can. He was a guy who mixed it up with a lot of good fighters, which explained the not so flattering record. What's more, Ledoux was one of 4 fighters that Holmes defended against in 1980 alone. That's a pretty busy schedule.
I have Lennox Lewis as #3. To me, Ali and Louis are a clear level above the rest in terms of accomplishments. There's very little between the #2 and the #6. Lewis always faced the best available (with the exception of being ducked) and rose to the occasion and scored upsets (Ruddock, Golota, Grant, Holyfield). Right now we can see that he shouldn't have been the underdog in those fights except for the Ruddock fight, but he was given at best even odds in those fights, yet he blew out Golota, Ruddock, Grant and dominated Holyfield. Dempsey and Holmes ducked too many challengers to be my #3 but i have Holmes in my top6. Marciano was great and dominant but lack longetivity a bit, so i have him at #4.
My three spot would either be Holmes or Marciano, different days I could switch them two around. I do agree with the premise that Ali and Louis are #1 and #2 in that order as well.
For me it is a constant battle between Jim Jeffries, Jack Johnson and Jack Dempsey for the No3 spot. Mr Louis and Mr Ali always take the first two slots.
LeDoux was actually better than a couple of Holmes title oppontants, which says a lot. I had LeDoux's face because most of the other journeymen/tomato cans Holmes fought weren't even on google images
Tunney is so over rated it's not even funny. He has two wins over a faded Dempsey and some have him top 5. Might as well have Michael Spinks near the top by that logic as well.
