Did you really want to see this tho? Especially considerin how badly Oscar was deterioratin at that time.
Why is it a duck now not to give an immediate rematch? It was not a controversial result and Oscar never put himself back in contention with any good wins. The concept of ducking is really getting stretched here.
Oscar had a rematch clause that he could exercise at any point during the next 12 months after the fight. Floyd retired for 12 months and a day denying any chance of Oscar to exercise the rematch clause. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck then it's a duck.
Oscar didn't deserve a rematch so why is that a bad thing? Rematch clauses are a bad idea to begin with
Floyd announced his retirement 13 months after their fight, so Oscar had the opportunity to exercise that clause but didn't. https://boxrec.com/wiki/index.php/Floyd_Mayweather_Jr._vs._Ricky_Hatton
For me it was the guys that he said he'd beat but never faced. Khan was a potential opponent for ages but after fans picked him in the online poll, Mayweather studiously avoided him. Floyd talked up a storm about how he'd make "easy work" of Golovkin, but when GGG offered to go down to his weight to meet him, Floyd was only conspicuous due to the long, yellow urine trail he left behind.
Because he fought over so many different weight classes there is going to be a lot of guys people will say he should have fought. There's plenty of good fighters Pac didn't face either.
I concur on this 100%. FM was only a betting underdog in 2 of his championship fights. That's why FOR ME, the charge of ducking may not be exactly spot on, but NAVIGATING to always have thew upper hand is the issue in my mind. Fans get upset that he doesn't get his "respect" well big risk, big rewards. He never took much risk so the rewards aren't that great. All the ALL TIME GREATS at some point took a fight they weren't expected to win & cemented something for themselves. Ali v Liston / Foreman, Holyfield / Tyson, SRL / Hagler, Duran jumped up to take on everyone. FM for these reasons, just isn't made of the same "stuff". JMO of course. PS - Always declaring himself as TBE doesn't help either. If it's true others will say it.
Downgrading a great fighter for being favored in his fights is absurd. I guess you view Ali the same way since he probably was only an underdog three times (counting the Liston rematch) before the 80s.
Ward refused to fight Golovkin, same as Floyd, even after GGG said he'd move down or up in weight for them.
