Joyce Carol Oates understands the motivation of fighters and spectators as well as anyone. John T. Ochs has a great, nuanced understanding of the sport, especially in regards to how a career worked in the the seminal years of the 20th century.

Carmen Basilio and Rocky Marciano were both very eloquent in discussing boxing. Look up some of their old interviews. Basilio is pretty funny, too.
Just to add a name to the list others have compiled in this thread, to me, Mike Tyson generally seems like he knows what he's taking about. As others have said: Dempsey knew the sport. I've heard, he was even secretly doing the Ring Rankings for a few years.
