When a fighter wins. they are put on a team members shoulders and paraded around the ring who started this? and how long has this been going on.
Hmmm, I don't recall seeing this prior to the Ali era. I am not sure if Ali started it, but I don't remember seeing it in the jack johnson fights or even the louis ones. So, I'd say Ali's after he beat liston the first time and did the shuffle and jumped into his seconds arm who carried him around.
.....joe louis' behavior after a win was the exact opposite of the flamboyant act. h was told not to smile after a win and jack blackburn usually got to the interviewer's mic and said, "another lucky night." this was a part of the role the bomber was given as the first black heavyweight champion since jack johnson drove the white people crazy with his thumbing his nose at the "as long as they known their place" mantra.
The earliest such filmed celebration I recall off the top of my head was Dempsey, after Jack raised his hand to wave to the audience in Toledo. The ring was filling after Willard shook his hand in congratulations before Jess left the ring. The swelling crowd between the ropes then engulfed him and raised him aloft, one ceremoniously "crowning" him with a wide brimmed "sombrero" type hat amidst the mounting jubilation. [This can all be seen in the complete real time footage.] Dempsey wrote that this cushion of shoulders carried him all the way back to the dressing room. We haven't seen this very much upon the passing of heavyweight honors, although it wouldn't surprise me if such a display took place among the lower weights earlier than Dempsey-Willard. Would certainly be interested in any written or filmed accounts of this happening prior to July 4, 1919.
