Was it Geale or the ref? Here's what I thought happened: Geale gets up quickly from a serious knockdown, doesn't have his legs, wants to show he's okay, stumbles a little bit, doesn't have his legs, the ref is giving him a chance. Geale shook his head a little in a frustrated way that a lot of fans thought was him actually telling the ref he didn't want to continue. The HBO crew thinks that too. The ref says for Geale to come to him and Geale's brains are too scrambled to seem like he was getting the instruction. He's out of it. The ref calls it. The ref tries to do the ref hug comfort thing and Geale can't even stand up well while the ref goes to do it, stumbling backwards to the other ropes and clearly not recovered by then even. So the way I saw it, Geale did NOT mean to tell the ref he didn't want to continue, his small head shake was misinterpreted for that instead of frustration with being knocked down and hurt, and he probably got up too soon to even give himself a good chance at recovering from that right hand. Now who saw what I saw and who saw it as Geale shooting straight up like he wanted to continue and then retiring himself on his feet after acknowledging the ref's instruction with a head shake in the negative that he would not come to him? I really do think he was too out of it to immediately get and follow the instruction and did not deliberately give up on the contest. I think he was trying to pull himself together.
It doesn't matter. I'm not questioning the obviously legit stoppage. I'm asking what the interpretation was of the people who post here on whether Geale meant to retire himself on his feet or if he was trying to recover and too out of it to realize what was going on? So don't misunderstand why and what I'm asking. It's absolutely nothing to do with questioning the legitimacy of the stoppage and everything to do with Geale's intention at the end. It's a curiosity in part to do with some things I heard Geale said about Macklin's performance against Golovkin and some comments after this fight by several fans about Geale's heart. I want to know if people saw it as I saw it, that's all.
Geale said post fight that the head shake was his frustration at getting caught, but he admitted he had been seriously hurt, and understood why the ref had stopped the fight based on how he looked combined with the head shake even if he himself felt he could have continued and tried to make it out of the round.
pretty much...the ref did a good job cos he was concussed for a good 3 minutes.the ref has to take in account the boxers body movments and geale was doing and saying the wrong things.ref gave him a count then sized him up..!
Whether his brain was scrambled or not he chose not to continue. Personally, he looked lucid and decided he didn't want anymore. The punch he took was flush on The front of his face, a punch that typically knocks guys down but not out. He knew he was beat, no point in putting himself in more danger, I don't have a problem with him stopping.
I think the ref stopped cause he looked at him and did the best for him "he saved him" many others would have go on the fight, but even is it just were 12 seconds until break, he was so shaky that GGG would have smached him hard before the bell :bbb so in his favour, the reff did the right thing..
[yt]eOxG_RGjvDs[/yt] Watch it again and if you still think he was ready to continue then you're a fool.
"When the count reaches eight, the referee often moves back two steps and instructs the boxer to walk towards them and hold his arms out. This helps the referee determine if the boxer is functioning and alert enough to continue. If the boxer is unsteady on their feet, or seems unable to focus on the referee, the bout is ended on account of a TKO." So what Geale did after the count? Right, he shook his head instead of nodding it. Ref could not read Geale's mind to understand his "smh" emotion and thus applied best judgement based on rules. Clear TKO.
Scar, Adil, please read what I actually said and how I replied to HoldMyBeer. If you're going to comment on someone's thread, try to understand what they are saying so you don't waste your time and the thread starter's time. Please. @HoldMyBeer, thank you. @Janeschicken, yeah I did see the post fight interview and noticed that nobody called Geale in on it but he's also taking a lot of flack from people in the-you know the Australian only part of this forum? The threads there are part of why I brought this thread up here. I was curious what they had to say about the fight and surprised there was a fair amount of animosity for their own guy in the aftermath. A lot of them don't seem to believe Geale's version but I personally do. The way he shot up made it look like he was trying to get it back and not at all in a mood to stop.
Geale did not quit, he was out of it, and couldnt recover in time due to getting up too soon. Him jumping up too soon was the reason why he was still wobly at count of 8.
