To have a rivalry,a fighter needs to have two or more highly competitive bouts with a fellow boxer. Holmes did n't have this. If he'd had a rematch with Ken Norton,then this would have constituted a rivalry. Earnie Shavers spoiled the party for a rematch,as we all know.
Different scenario. Marvin and Ray were threatening to fight for years,and at one time they were looked upon as the best two fighters,pound for pound,in the world.

Ali, holmes beat him but then spent spent five years in his shadow. But Holmes did not do 'rivalries' if he fought someone was a real rival he just ducked them.
I usually think of a rivalry as defined here to entail an exchange of wins, or at least results, such as a win and a draw. More than one bout has to take place between the opponents in question. Therefore, I don't consider SRL-Hagler to have been a rivalry like Hagler-Monroe, Hagler-Watts, or Hagler-Antuofermo (where their draw constituted a successful defense for Vito). SRL-Hearns does qualify in my estimation, and Ray also had Duran, who in turn had DeJesus, Lawlor and Castro. For me, a boxing rivalry can extend from the amateur to professional ranks, hence I'd tend to include SRL-Shields, Ali-Ellis, Tyson-Tillman and Gomez-Derrik Holmes. Larry did not have such a rival, or Michael Spinks for that matter, unless one considers their rematch to have been a blatant robbery. Holmes-Berbick? Larry took "both" meetings. Trevor was also owned as an amateur and professional by Mercado.
