Shakur Stevenson said Scull would've won ... boxing just like that ... if he was the "A-side." And he would know. This content is protected
It was a truly terrible fight. But people shouldn't kid themselves. I've been here when other fighters turned in equally terrible run-and-grab performances, and their fans on here called those fights "a master class" or "a clinic." Running is running.
He was much busier and totally controlled the fight with his legs. Canelo did as much as Scull did with his fists. They both landed the same small amount. It was bad. Truly bad. But they had a shiny belt all ready to give Canelo and Crawford was there for the big announcement, so the result was a foregone conclusion.
Although numbers don't always lie, the Alvarez - Scull fight is a classic example of how they can be misleading. Looking at the punches landed you would think the fight was close and competitive .... but quality matters. Almost all of Canelo's landed punches were thrown with power and intent. A lot of Scull's punches were soft and ineffective. This was by no means a great performance by Ol' Man Canelo but he clearly won this fight.
Everyone saw Scull get robbed. His effective aggression and amazing offensive output was amazing and he deserves an 10-2 type decision
scull had some very sneaky hard counters he was looking to throw. and his reach advantage allowed him to throw them safely from a distance outside of canelos reach. thats why canelo had no trouble staying with him, but just outside skulls countering range. once there he was hesitant to shorten the distance anymore because he was expecting scull to counter and slide out laterally. he had to try and time his punches when scull wasnt set to counter. scull basically did what canelo usually does to his opponents. made them doubtful about stepping into range and firing, because you know a hard counter is cocked and ready. scull just never really went after the crown, though.
Canelo, but this was closer than it needed to be simply because Alavarez contented himself with throwing 12 punches a round.
Scull's performance was so pathetic you don't win fights like that. At the boxing gym you get scalded for even sparring like that. In saying all that though a fighter of Canelo's caliber should've been able to cut him off and pin him in the corner or on the ropes and do a number on him. Canelo actually looked like he didn't really want to be there and he just couldn't be bothered he knew he was going to get the decision regardless as the Crawford fight was already signed. I think the whole event pissed Canelo off he didn't want to fight in front of a small crowd against a nobody on Cinco De Mayo in Saudi Arabia he was purely there for the pay day.
